Spice Market Menu Tasting at Market

New York’s famed Spice Market has been featured at Market thru April 18 with a special tasting menu. Inspired by the street food Jean-Georges enjoyed while travelling in Southeast Asia, the menu was created for a fun and flavourful culinary journey transporting diners to a Vietnamese street market or a Thai food stall.

I tasted a variety of dishes off their dinner tasting menu, which offered a 5 course menu featuring 10 flavours for $68.

My take:

My favourite dishes from all the ones that I tasted were Yellowfin Tuna as well as the delicious Shrimp Dumplings with lobster and shitake mushroom sauce. The Chicken Samosa in Cilantro Yogurt which was amazing. I loved both of the desserts which had very different flavour profiles, Vietnamese Coffee Tart with Condensed Milk Ice Cream was smooth and creamy while the Thai Jewels, Tropical Fruits and Shaved Coconut Ice was filled with textures and flavours which was a fabulous finish to a wonderful meal.

Afternoon Tea at Soirette Macarons & Tea

Afternoon Tea is an art and should be an extraordinary experience one that you will cherish. Vancouver has some wonderful places for you to indulge in an Afternoon Tea experience. Each of the places is unique in what they offer along with the type of service and selection of sandwiches, pastries and desserts. I am on a journey around the city to find these extraordinary places.

Here is the twenty third of many places that I have visited recently.Soirette Macarons & Tea is located on Pender Street in Coal Harbour.

My mom joined me and we had their High Tea service for $35 per person. I had the Matcha Tea and my mom had the Lavender Earl Grey Tea. They have a wide selection of 30 teas and you can smell them and then choose from any one of their teas.

We were then invited to the Macaron display case to choose one macaron each which was then served to us along with the sweets selection. I chose the Almondine and my mom had the Rocher.

On the middle tier, the lovely Mini Date & Walnut Scones Brandy Butter, Soirette Cranberry & Anise jam. On the top tier are their delicious Desserts including the yummy Chestnut chocolate mousseline trifle, Carrot cake with cream cheese and pumpkin mousse, Scottish Shortbread, Rosemary and Cardamom truffle, Lemon meringue tart, and our Roche and Almondine macarons.

My thoughts - From the assortment of savouries I loved the Thyme and Chicken Pot Pie, Cranberry and Turkey Sandwich, and the Carrot & Parsnip soup   The home-made Date & Walnut scones were delicious with the brandy butter butter (topped with mini flowers) and cranberry and anise jam. From the assortment of sweets, I loved the  Carrot cake with cream cheese and pumpkin mousse, Chestnut chocolate mousseline trifle, Lemon meringue tart,  Almondine Macaron, Scottish Shortbread, Rosemary and Cardamom truffle.

An Artful Addition Afternoon Tea at Xi Shi Lounge

Afternoon Tea is an art and should be an extraordinary experience one that you will cherish. Vancouver has some wonderful places for you to indulge in an Afternoon Tea experience. Each of the places is unique in what they offer along with the type of service and selection of sandwiches, pastries and desserts. I am on a journey around the city to find these extraordinary places.

Here is the twenty second of many places that I have visited recently. The Xi Shi Lounge is located in the Shangri-La Hotel in Vancouver.

Ron Smid

Ron Smid

I have experienced Afternoon Tea in this lounge previously, this time around the Shangri-La Hotel has done something quite different. They created an artful afternoon tea experience that mixes in Canadian photographic works by renowned master photographer Ron Smid in his celebrated collection Canada: The Light on Our Land.

Guests can view the collection in Xi Shi Lounge and enjoy familiar Canadian flavours with the Artist in Residence Afternoon Tea. Smid will be in the lounge on Saturdays and Sundays, from 1 to 4 p.m., through to April 15, 2014. to speak about the collection, share tales from his journeys across Canada’s wilderness, and answer questions about his unique and rare photography process.

A passionate photographic purist, Smid uses a vintage 1936 large-format wooden camera to capture the elusive light on analogue film, without the use of digital technology. Over the past two decades, he has travelled more than a quarter of a million miles to document the geographic diversity of Canada in all its beauty. From a fiery Pacific sunrise on Vancouver Island to a final twilight crescendo of surf through The Arc in Newfoundland, this exhibit showcases the finest collection of Canadian landscape images. Smid’s work is found in private and corporate collections around the world, and is sold exclusively through the Ron Smid Collection gallery located in the Upper Village in Whistler, B.C.

Italian Almond Tea

Italian Almond Tea

First off, I chose my tea of choice from their selection of teas, I chose the “Italian Almond Tea” and my friend Avelino had the “Single Estate Darjeeling tea”.

On the Go – Restaurant Delivery in Vancouver

delivery

There is a new type of food delivery service called the Breakfast Courier that delvers healthy oriented breakfast eats from restaurants to the doorsteps of residents by bicycle downtown, Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant and areas including Railtown to Commercial Drive. Their website is well layed out and simple to use, just go to the website, explore the menu and order the only thing that I thought could be improved would be to allow people to pre-order breakfast the night before so they get their order delivered at a specific time the next morning. It is fairly limited for now, I hope they are able to expand the offerings and arrange deliveries to include Yolks Breakfast, Deacons Corner, and other morning oriented establishments. Their menu is designed specifically for delivery by a Red Seal Chef and the Head Butcher at the Fairmont Pacific Rim to ensure the meal maintains its quality until it reaches you. This company is based out of Vancouver.

Tip: You can sign up and have specials delivered right to your inbox. I like that you can browse the various menus, Follow them on Twitter @BreakfstCourier and call them at (604) 336-2018.

Another local delivery service is, Lazy Meal where you simply select a restaurant, pick your food, and place the order. This delivery service is based on specific popular cuisines such as Pizza, Indian, Italian, Chinese, Sushi as well as a Bakery option. They offer their delivery services for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. This company is based out of Vancouver.

Tip: Follow them on Twitter and Facebook to receive M. Hungry coupon codes. Location based restaurant browser for pickup & delivery. Follow on Twitter @lazymeal and call them at (604) 568-7434

5 Delivery is another locally based company who offers delivery from unique local restaurants that don’t offer delivery themselves, as well as your favourite takeout and delivery restaurants. This service is scooter based and is currently only available downtown Vancouver.  Many cuisines are offered from popular Chinese, Italian, American, and Mexican menus to Asian Fusion, Thai, Lebanese and Vietnamese. This company is based out of Vancouver.

Just Eat is a delivery service that is similar to Lazy Meal except they offer similar services in cities all across Canada. Order food delivery online from delivery restaurants near you in Toronto, Vancouver, Ottawa and many more cities in Canada. Their moto is Don’t Cook, JUST EAT! They offer online and smartphone ordering and have a free app available for download, to enable you to order off your phone wherever you may be. This delivery service is also based on specific popular cuisines such as Pizza, Indian, Italian, and Chinese. You go to the site or app and enter your postal code which then shows you the available restaurants nearby and then you place your order and they deliver.  This company is based out of the UK.

Foodler makes online ordering of take-out and delivery food from local restaurants quick and easy as they say. From popular Chinese, Italian, American, and Mexican menus to exotic Thai, Spanish, and Brazilian. They also offer online and smartphone ordering and have a free app available for download, to enable you to order off your phone wherever you may be. They offer a point based system to reward customers. You earn 3 points for every dollar you spend on Foodler, 4 points for every restaurant rating, and 2 points for every item you rate. Ratings must be submitted within one week of receiving your food. There is also a very neat Map feature where you can visually see the participating restaurants in the local area.  This company is based out of Boston.

Tip:  Location based restaurant browser for delivery. They also offer a gold program to collect more points. Follow them on Twitter @Foodler

OrderIt.ca offers delivery from unique local restaurants that don’t offer delivery themselves, as well as your favourite takeout and delivery restaurants. They have a fleet of vehicles and drivers serving a variety of eateries, including high-end restaurants. Search by cuisine type, neighborhood or inspiration to find the restaurants and their menus. They also offer a points program, theirs is called GO points.

One thing that I would like to see at least one of these companies offer is delivery food from the Food Trucks during lunch hour which would be great for everyone involved. If you are looking for restaurant delivery to your home or office and don’t have the time to go and get it yourselves these are the largest companies offering all sorts of delivery services to get you food quick.

Chinese New Year at Bambudda

bambudda 1

Bambudda in Gastown will be featuring a selection of canapes and cocktails to celebrate the Year of the Horse Chinese New Year Jan 31 to Feb. 9. I had an opportunity to taste some of the delicious eats and drinks last week at this newish hot spot in Gastown that offers a modern take on traditional Cantonese cuisine, and an intriguing cocktail selection.
