Johnny’s-Pops

Johnny’s Pops is Vancouver’s handmade artisan popsicles that are sold on a bicycle. You can find the bright red freezer on wheels along with Johnny himself on streets around the city, as well as the Food Cart Festival every Sunday through-out the summer. He makes up all sorts of flavours, I have had the Avocado Lime which I loved, you may also want to try the Raspberry Lime, Mango Yogurt Strawberry; Blueberry; Apricot Salted Caramel; Rhubarb Elderflower and more exciting flavours.

On June 25, 2014 we presented our Tasting Plates Latin American Flavours event that showcased 7 restaurants all over Vancouver featuring cuisine from Mexico, Peru, San Salvador and more.

It was an exciting night of tasting all sorts of Latin American food and drink starting off with a selection of coffees at A.G.R.O. Coffee Roasters where registration took place.

Tasting Plates Latin American Flavours on June 25

Tantalize your taste buds at several Latin American restaurants all over Vancouver.  This evening tasting extravaganza goes from 6pm until 10:30 pm and is presented by Vancouver Foodster.

Each restaurant will be serving up Tasting Plates for guests to enjoy and you will have a chance to visit many different types of Latin American restaurants throughout the evening, meet some new food loving friends, meet the chefs, and learn about each of the participating restaurants.

Latin American cuisine refers to typical foods, beverages, and cooking styles common to many of the countries and cultures in Latin America. During our event you will have the chance to taste and experience dishes from Bolivia, Brazil, El Salvador, Peru and different regions of Mexico. You will also have a chance to try a variety of Latin American food and drink which may include ceviche, tortillas, tamales, tacos, pupusas, arepas, empanadas, tortas along with various salsas and other condiments. Desserts that you may have a chance to try include dulce de leche, alfajor, rice pudding, tres leches cake, teja and flan. You may also have a chance to try and experience beverages such as horchata, chicha, mate, hibiscus tea, cacao and aguas frescas.

Afternoon Tea at Faubourg Paris

Afternoon Tea is an art and should be an extraordinary experience one that you will cherish. Vancouver has some wonderful places for you to indulge in an Afternoon Tea experience. Each of the places is unique in what they offer along with the type of service and selection of sandwiches, pastries and desserts. I am on a journey around the city to find these extraordinary places.

Here is the twenty fourth of many places that I have visited recently. Faubourg Paris is located on 41st Avenue in Kerrisdale.

My mom joined me for a pre Mother’s Day treat and we had their Pink Afternoon Tea service for $28.55 per person. I had the Marco Polo Tea and my mom had the French Breakfast Tea. They have a nice selection of French teas from Mariage Frères Tea, you can smell them and then choose from any one of their teas.

A two tiered plate filled with an assortment of Savories on the bottom plate that included a Vegetarian sandwich, Smoked salmon croissant, Goat Cheese Canapé, Mini quiche, Verrine (Beef Bourguignon) and Chicken Sandwich, along with 2 miniature Orange Scones, cream and strawberry jam. The top plate included mini Citron Tart, Chocolate Mousse, Coffee Opera Cake, Fruit tart, Chocolate dipped vanilla sable, Coconut Panna Cotta with Mango Gelée, Caramleized Almond Frangipane Slice and a Earl Grey Torte with Pistachio Cream .

To finish off this wonderful tea service we were each served a Berry Soufflé warm right out of the oven (takes 10 minutes so let your server know when you are ready for this treat).

My thoughts – From the assortment of savouries, my mom and I loved the Vegetarian sandwich, Smoked salmon croissant, Goat Cheese Canapé, and Verrine (Beef Bourguignon). The home-made Orange Scones were perfectly baked, flakey and delicious. From the assortment of sweets, I loved the mini Citron Tart, Berry Fruit tart, Coconut Panna Cotta with Mango Gelée, Caramleized Almond Frangipane Slice and a Earl Grey Torte with Pistachio Cream, my mom loved the Chocolate Mousse and the Coffee Opera Cake, all the sweets were outstanding. The Souffle at the end of the Pink Afternoon Tea service was a nice touch and it was delicious too.

New York’s famed Spice Market has been featured at Market thru April 18 with a special tasting menu. Inspired by the street food Jean-Georges enjoyed while travelling in Southeast Asia, the menu was created for a fun and flavourful culinary journey transporting diners to a Vietnamese street market or a Thai food stall.

My take:

My favourite dishes from all the ones that I tasted were Yellowfin Tuna as well as the delicious Shrimp Dumplings with lobster and shitake mushroom sauce. The Chicken Samosa in Cilantro Yogurt which was amazing. I loved both of the desserts which had very different flavour profiles, Vietnamese Coffee Tart with Condensed Milk Ice Cream was smooth and creamy while the Thai Jewels, Tropical Fruits and Shaved Coconut Ice was filled with textures and flavours which was a fabulous finish to a wonderful meal.
