FINEST AT SEA

4675 Arbutus Street, Vancouver

Tel: 604-266-1904

Web: www.finestatsea.com

Advice: Located in a strip mall, no reservations.

With my love for fish, I had missed eating at one of the city’s notable seafood boutiques. I can’t believe it took me so long to visit for the 1st time and I returned within a week for more of their delicious fish. The seafood boutique as they call themselves is part fresh fish store and part fish & chips stand within the store. You get a bit of the best of both worlds when visiting, they also have a large deli case of home made prepared foods of which were calling my name as I was waiting for my fish & chips to go.

1 Piece Halibut & Yam Fries

2 Piece Halibut & Yam Fries

On the first visit I had the Halibut & Chips and substituted the chips for Yam Fries which were absolutely delish! On the 2nd visit, which was purely to have more of the delicious halibut, I ended up getting a 2 Piece Halibut & Chips with more yam fries and while waiting I also took a selection of dishes home including a delish polenta, gnocchi, some of their house smoked salmon candy as well as their black cod candy which were both outstanding.

If you love fish and seafood, this is a boutique you are going to want to visit repeatedly. It’s like going to the beach without actually going to the beach.

The Fish Shack Opening

On October 24th, I attended the opening party of The Fish Shack, the newest restaurant from the Glowbal Group. Housed in the former Sanafir location, the soaring 100-seat space has been completely transformed to reflect the casual new offer.

BOX Interior Design led the revamp with a nod to the nautical. Marine-blue walls are offset by cool green tiling. Red upholstered banquettes conjure the look of vintage lifejackets. And the chalkboard walls are perfect for sharing fish facts alongside daily features.

Advice: Make a reservation or drop by, open for lunch and dinner.

Fish & Chips

Blackened Salmon Salad

Recognizing an eatery who has been feeding neighborhood diners for over 10 years seems to be an anomaly these days, one of my favourites has been doing just that. Focussing on fresh fish and seafood, the Fish Café keeps it simple and seasonal, last summer they tied for 1st place in my Best Fish & Chips in Vancouver, this is one of those places worth visiting if you have yet to do. Asides from their grilled and fried fish, they also offer dishes with prawns, mussels and other seafood choices. I have had their delicious Halibut Fish & Chips ($18.95) 2 large pieces of halibut, fries, tartar sauce and ketchup with lemon wedges; as well as their Salmon & Chips ($14.95) 2 large pieces of halibut, fries, tartar sauce and ketchup with lemon wedges. Most recently I had the Blackened Salmon Salad ($12) filled with greens, tomatoes, corn and other vegetables topped with a large serving of blackened salmon.

Owner/Chef Marcus Stiller is in the kitchen, he knows how to cook the perfect fish which he has been doing since day one. It often takes a lot of passion and hard work to keep a restaurant going over a year, and Marcus has worked his craft for over the past 13 years. He has a simple wine and beer list, along with fish and seafood with flavour, and he is always up for an informative chat.

PIER 7 RESTAURANT

25 Wallace Mews Rd, North Vancouver

Tel: 604-929-7437

Web: http://pierseven.ca/

Twitter: @pier7restaurant

Advice: Make reservations, try to snag a spot on the upstairs patio.

I love a room with a view, at Pier 7 the restaurant offers two rooms with a view. On the main level you will find a happening bar/lounge that flows into the dining room where you will find gridded windows providing a very nice view of the city skyline. Upstairs on the 2nd level you will find another dining area that opens on to a beautiful patio that is expected to be seating people very soon.

Mixed Greens

I have always been a fan of Executive Chef Dino Renaerts and his cooking, here it is all about finding the very best fish and seafood, though there are many other outstanding dishes as well. I had dinner with my friend Cassandra recently and we decided to share so that we can taste a few of the dishes. To start we had the Mixed Greens ($8 small) with toasted pecans, apple, celery, and cider dressing.

Grilled West Coast Spring Salmon

Goat Cheese Gnocchi

Next was the outstanding Grilled West Coast Spring Salmon ($25) with a delicious roasted polenta cake and broccolini; the other outstanding dish was the Goat Cheese Gnocchi ($20) garden vegetables, pesto, shaved parmesan that was flavourful and so, so good!

Maple Miso Glazed Sable Fish

Grilled Asparagus

Yet another outstanding dish, the fish was so tender in the Maple Miso Glazed Sable Fish ($28) with edamame, shiimeji mushrooms, new potatoes, in the flavourful dashi broth; we also had a side order of the simple and flavourful Grilled Asparagus ($8) parmesan, balsamic vinegar.

Raspberry Macaroon

For dessert, we only shared one having the Raspberry Macaroon ($8) whipped mascarpone, fresh raspberries, warm anglaise sauce. I am looking forward to return visit to check out the upstairs patio as well as to indulge in brunch!

Advice: Go with a friend or two and share some plates.

Amuse

The restaurant is hidden off of Alberni Street and upstairs and it is situated next to the Shangri-La Hotel. Once inside the restaurant is large and spacious, featuring an elegant dining room, a spectacular hidden patio outside and an upper area of seating with the sushi bar. I had dinner here last week for the very first time and enjoyed the wonderful service and fine Japanese cuisine, my friend and I were served an Amuse to begin along with some hot towels.

Seaweed Salad

Organic Baby Greens Salad

Ki Spider Roll & Ki Beef Maki

We then shared a couple of salads including the refreshing Seaweed Salad ($9) with a sesame-ponzu dressing along with the Organic Baby Greens Salad ($6) with Ki ginger-apple dressing; this followed by a sushi platter featuring these delicious sushi rolls, the Ki Spider Roll ($15) soft shell crab, mango, perilla leaves, chives and the Ki Beef Maki ($15) teriyaki-glazed Canadian AAA striploin, scallions, sesame seeds, sweet potato tempura + asparagus.

Atlantic Salmon Kushi

Tofu & Eggplant

Next was the kushiyaki (skewers) and we shared the flavourful Atlantic Salmon Kushi ($16) and the subtle and delicious Tofu & Eggplant ($10) glazed with Aka-miso.

Black Cod

Jumbo Shrimp

Sweet Potato Wedges

This followed by a couple of Hot Plates, the melt in my mouth Black Cod ($19) saikyo-marinated + broiled with rapini, salmon roe + orange reduction and the tangy Jumbo Shrimp ($16) wok-tossed + tomato rayu-chili sauce along with one side of Sweet Potato Wedges ($8) with wasabi mayo.

Almond Asian Pear Cake

Lemongrass Chamomile infused Creme Brûlée

Chocolates

For dessert we shared the beautifully plated and delicious Almond Asian Pear Cake ($10) along with the Lemongrass Chamomile infused Creme Brûlée ($9) along with a glass of Nakano Shuzo Ume ($6). To finish the meal we were served a complimentary box of home made chocolates. The restaurant features one of the most comprehensive Sake lists in the city that I know of, where you will find Sake from Japan as well as locally brewed.

BLUE CANOE RESTAURANT

140 – 3866 Bayview Street, Richmond

Tel: 604-275-7811

Web: www.bluecanoerestaurant.com

Twitter: @bluecanoeresto

Advice: has an extensive craft beer list, beer pairings can be added to your meal for an additional cost. Tasters of beers ranged in price by the type of beer.

Salt Spring Island Mussels

Located on the waterfront with a patio that overlooks the marina in Steveston Village, I came with an appetite for seafood, had dinner on the heated patio with a great view of the boats and the sun setting in the West. To start off my meal I had the fresh and tasty Salt Spring Island Mussels ($12) with Red Racer Extra Special Beer, mint, dill, basil, lemon zest and grapefruit oil in the broth, topped with thin crispy French fries, they paired the dish with a taster of the Red Racer ESB as well as a taster of the Paired with Anchor Steam Beer.

Halibut Collar

Local Salmon in a Jar

Sous-Chef Kylo Hoy then prepared his house speciality Halibut Collar ($15) with a delicious citrus drawn butter with pickled garlic, a speciality dish that isn’t always on the menu. The Halibut was paired with a taster of the North Coast Le Mere, a farmhouse ale. Next up was a dish that I had eaten on my last visit, unique and delish is the Local Salmon in a Jar ($13) it is course salmon pate served with caper and tasty almond biscuits, paired with Red Racer white ale.

Beef Braised Chili

Beef Short Rib

Chef suggested that I try another speciality which was the outstanding and perfectly paired Beef Braised Chili ($17) served with lime salted corn chips and corn bread topped with a dollop of sour cream, this dish paired with Angry Boy Brown Ale (Baird Brewery of Japan). The next dish was the delectable Beef Short Rib ($11) Ale braised, mustard and chilli mash, house made onion rings; paired with Driftwood Ale.

Peanut Butter Pie

Although quite full from the delicious meal I had a half slice of their Peanut Butter Pie made with peanut butter ice cream for dessert.

You’ll find an extensive menu of seafood favourites including fish, shellfish, oysters, as well as steaks, and social plates for sharing. The beer list has over 47 beers on their ever evolving menu. The chefs are creative and full of ideas to create unique dishes, service is exceptional and the bartenders are knowledgeable in their craft, I’m already looking forward to my return visit.

GO FISH

Go Fish

1505 W. First Avenue, Vancouver
Tel: 604-730-5040

Advice: They don’t take reservations. Open rain or shine, call for hours. Line-ups can be long on sunny days.

I am a regular at this outside, take out seafood shack at Fisherman’s Wharf, located minutes away from my office, say hi to Travis and Wanda both wonderful people who will greet you on your visit. This is by far the best restaurant for salmon in the city, I have a few favorites here and the first is their Chargrill Salmon on a bed of greens ($10) and I always order extra pieces of salmon ($4.50), they give me a little container of ponzu (house made and the most addicting ever) on the side. I often get a half order of fries as well as a side of coleslaw too. The other favorite is the Salmon Tacones ($5 for 1 piece or $9 for 2), these are simply amazing!  Made of a grilled smoky tortilla, grilled wild salmon, side-stripe shrimp mayonnaise and fresh salsa.
