Advice: Reservations suggested. Bring a friend to share some sushi rolls.

There are sushi joints and then there are sushi joints, while the city is filled with sushi eateries on almost every block, there are few that standout in décor, vibe and food. This eatery is related to the Eatery located in Kitsilano and this one is quite different when it comes to the décor and the type of people who is patronizing them, here it is hipster and family central. Funky decor with a wilderness lodge theme adding to the bizarre decorated room, loved the 74 white masks that adorn the room. With a vast selection of items, the star attraction here are the named sushi rolls and other Japanese favourites which are ideal for sharing. My friend Jonathan Yee joined me to do just that, share a variety of items so that I could try as much as possible.

Tuna Tempura

Tuna Sushi Bites

Salmon Tartare

Tunacado

Tempura Prawns

To start the meal we enjoy enjoyed a sampler of their house specialty Tuna Tempura which we both thought had good flavour and crunch. We then shared the yummy Tuna Sushi Bites that were topped on a rice cake followed by the Salmon Tartare served with large won ton type crisps for dipping. I loved the Tunacado so fresh and filled with avocado which also came with won ton type crisps. We also shared Tempura Prawns with tangy sweet sauce, battered for a good crunch .

Viva Las Vegas

San Francisco Roll

Dragon Roll

The Cucu’s Nest Cucumber Wrap

Next up we savoured some of their popular Sushi Rolls, starting off with Viva Las Vegas with cream cheese, followed by the San Francisco Roll topped with a bland salmon which was my least favourite of all & the outstanding Dragon Roll filled with crab and avocado as well as The Cucu’s Nest Cucumber Wrap filled with crab wrapped in a cucumber shell with mango.

It’s a good thing they don’t specialize in dessert, since their dessert offerings were minimal and since we were both utterly full, we ended our meal on a high note.

Advice: Call for reservations, bring a magnifier glass and flashlight to read the menu.

Beef Tataki

Shishito Peppers

Humpback Shrimp

Chocolate Truffle Fritters

With a pedigree of star studded crew, the shining light here is spearheaded by Co-owner, Chef Makato Ono who heads the kitchen. The menu offers dishes that are a mix of Japanese, Korean, and French with unique flavours to brighten up our culinary scene. Almost each dish I had the ingredients were spellbound. I had the Beef Tataki ($14) with black garlic, Comte, wasabi, mayo, chips which was full of flavours & textures. The Shishito Peppers ($6) with Parmessan and pine nuts was a bit too bold in flavour as I hit the jackpot on the first bite with a severe hot pepper that had my mouth on fire for minutes. The Humpback Shrimp ($12) with citrus, celery and whipped roe was outstanding, where the citrus shines in this dish! To finish off I had the delicious Chocolate Truffle Fritters ($8) where the chocolate melted in the centre in a delicate form, accompanied by a matcha sauce.

You will find Sake on Tap along with Wine on Tap, a stunning room for dining and a menu that is unique, bold and quite different than you have seen in our city. This is a chef and kitchen team you are going to want to keep your eyes on!

Gokujo Ginjo by Yoshinogawa

Off the beaten path, in a strip mall that is surrounded by Asian restaurants, you walk through the door and you have arrived in Japan. From the rustic décor to the servers to the extensive Sake list to the menu that is full of delightful dishes, Japan is alive and well in Richmond. I always enjoy the company of at least one other friend to join me on a dining adventure so that I can taste a multitude of dishes, I invited Lindsay Anderson to join me as my dining partner for the night. Lindsay is on a year-long mission to dine at many restaurants in Richmond as she blogs for Tourism Richmond, this was my first time meeting her and we had a wonderful time eating and sharing our food stories. To begin our dining adventure a toast was in order with Sake chilled Gokujo Ginjo by Yoshinogawa (the 300ml bottle for $33.80).

Kani Kaiwara

Kimpira Gobo salad

We started with the Kani Kaiwara ($9.50) with crab, radish sprouts, cucumber, avocado with a light citrus ponzu dressing. The next appetizer was the outstanding Kimpira Gobo Salad ($3.95), which I loved, it was made from burdock root.

Soft Shell Crab Karaage

Grilled Yakitori (chicken) skewers

House Roll and Avocado Yam Roll

Seafood Motoyaki

Next we had the Soft Shell Crab Karaage ($10.50) it was a whole crab battered, crispy with a crunch where the crab meat was tender on the inside. Then we had the Grilled Yakitori (chicken) Skewers ($4.50) which came with 2 skewers. My favourite of all of the were the rolls, we shared the House Roll ($11.95) with prawn tempura topped with unagi, avocado, and masago; and the Avocado Yam Roll ($8.95) tempura yam with avocado on top. Our last dish was the Seafood Motoyaki ($9.95), it was crab baked inside a circle of sliced scallops and topped with mayo which was ok but had too much mayo for my liking.

I was quite full from all of the dishes that we had and therefore passed on dessert as I enjoyed the sake and our conversation.

Experiencing the Richmond Night Market

On Saturday night my friend Nikki Caine and I visited this market for the first time, I know this may come as a surprise to you, how is it possible that I haven’t been before, well it’s true. I first thought we would check it out, spend an hour and or so, we quickly discovered that this was going to be a night long experience, we then spent 4 hours eating our way around the market.

Pazza Rella Pizza

Margerita Pizza – Pazza Rella Pizza

Salami Pizza – Pazza Rella Pizza

Our 1st stop was to Pazza Rella Pizza and believe me this was a good idea, Neapolitan style pizza made in a wood burning oven that is on a food truck, very cool and a great experience. Nikki and I shared two pizzas, the Margerita (fior di latte cheese, tomato sauce, basil) and the Salami (salami, cheese, tomato sauce), you can find these two wonderful women pizza makers and their truck at this market every weekend through October or follow them on twitter @PazzaRellaPizza

Roti Canai

Making the Roti at Roti Canai

Chocolate Roti at Roti Canai

Our 2nd stop after running into my friend Russel Co (he is an experienced Richmond Night Market visitor who happily gave us some helpful eating tips and the best BBQ spot, more on that later in the post) was at Roti Canai and we ordered the Chocolate Roti. My friend hadn’t tried Roti before which I couldn’t believe, so we ordered it and since I hadn’t had chocolate in Roti before I thought heck let’s try it and so glad that we did, this was delicious!

Tip: Since it’s always crowded and there are line-ups almost everywhere, throw out the notion of eating savouries then dessert and mix it up.

Georgio’s Pinoy BBQ

Georgio’s Pinoy BBQ

Our 3rd stop was to Georgio’s Pinoy BBQ  (this was Russel’s pick, he said it was the best BBQ at the market) we waited and we watched them barbq the meat, then it was time to indulge in BBQ Pork on a skewer and it was flavourful.

As we walked up and down the aisles of food stalls, some we looked at such as the Deep Fried Dessert Bus (we couldn’t eat here,  it wasn’t a food of choice for us, however the line-up was deep) people were lining up for deep fried mars and snickers bars, even deep fried cheese cake.  We continued walking.

Japanese Rice Burger & Fries

Japanese Yam Fries with honey garlic sauce

Our 4th stop was at Japanese Rice Burger & Fries and here we ordered the Japanese Yam Fries with honey garlic sauce and this was yum, again we were sharing and this was a good dish to share.

making Dragon Beard Candy

We were so curious after hearing about Dragon Beard Candy, having no idea as to what that was, we visited their stand to watch and talk, discovering that it is a Chinese version of Cotton Candy, we will indulge in this treat next time.

Mango Yummy

Mangos, Vanilla Ice Cream & Shaved Ice at Mango Yummy

Our 5th stop was at Mango Yummy (this was the favourite pick of the women who work at Pazza Rella Pizza and we took their suggestion), it all looked good, we settled on the Mangos & Ice Cream with shaved ice and again sharing was the right thing to do, this was delicious and was one of my favourite dishes of the night.

More walking around we saw a stand that jumped out at a me more in awe, I had no idea what Itofu was selling, so I had a closer look, I was curious as to what Tofu with Black Sugar was, they saw me being very curious and then offered me a taste which I happily had and decided to try that dish another time.

Walked by Le Tigre Cuisine, I knew that these guys also have a food truck located downtown during the week, since they had quite the line-up I decided I will wait and visit their food truck one day soon.

Rotato

Making Rotato

Seasoning our Rotato

Caramel Rotato

Our 6th stop was at Rotato, obviously this is one of the most popular stands at the market, this one seemed to have the longest line-up all night long, so we decided why wait an hour earlier in the night and we made it our last stop of the night at 10:30 pm and waited about 10 minutes. We shared the Caramel Rotato, now if you haven’t been to this market you may be wondering what a Rotato is, besides the cool name, it is actually a potato that was sliced up in some sort of twisted machine, then skewered on a stick and deep fried. Then after you choose your flavour (they have savoury and sweet flavours) they sprinkle it all over and voila you are served your Rotato –this was really good, worth the 10 minute wait, not sure if it is worth an hour wait but you can be the judge.

Tip: You need good walking shoes, wear dark clothes (if you wear white any food that lands on you will show), and take a long a sweater or light jacket.

Tip: Don’t drive to this market, take Canada Line like we did, it’s quick and so easy.

Tip: There is a long line-up to get in and it moves quite fast.

Tip: It is cash only for entrance as well as at most of the vendors.

Cost: $1.50 per person to enter

Hours: 7pm – 12:30am

Open: Weekends at night only thru the summer until October

Location: 8351 River Road, Richmond and here is a map on how to find it.

We also walked around all of the non-food stalls and saw all sorts of neat items, the item that stood out the most was the cases for iphones, this is one popular item which can be found at the 10+ stalls throughout the market. On the food side there were 88 Food stalls and on the other side at least 200 stalls, so expect to do lots of walking and most of all lots of eating at this market.

Minami Restaurant Opening

Last night June 21st, I attended the opening party of Minami Restaurant in Yaletown.

Chefs team

Seigo Nakamura was on hand to greet guests and speak as he welcomed guests to his 2nd restaurant in Vancouver, his company also owns 8 restaurants in Japan. Minami is named after his youngest daughter. This restaurant mixes his love for Japanese food and art and they want to become the leading restaurant in the city with the largest selection of Sake.

The cocktail list was curated by well known local barman Shaun Layton and Pacific Pimm’s cocktails were served along with wine and sake throughout the evening.

Guests mingled over delicious canapés all selections of their extensive menu that not only features their Aburi Sushi, there was also a wonderful refreshing soba noodle salad and other tasty bites.

Minami Restaurant is located at  1118 Mainland Street in Yaletown and is open daily for lunch and dinner. You can find them on twitter @MinamiYaletown

Advice: Go with a friend or two and share some plates.

Amuse

The restaurant is hidden off of Alberni Street and upstairs and it is situated next to the Shangri-La Hotel. Once inside the restaurant is large and spacious, featuring an elegant dining room, a spectacular hidden patio outside and an upper area of seating with the sushi bar. I had dinner here last week for the very first time and enjoyed the wonderful service and fine Japanese cuisine, my friend and I were served an Amuse to begin along with some hot towels.

Seaweed Salad

Organic Baby Greens Salad

Ki Spider Roll & Ki Beef Maki

We then shared a couple of salads including the refreshing Seaweed Salad ($9) with a sesame-ponzu dressing along with the Organic Baby Greens Salad ($6) with Ki ginger-apple dressing; this followed by a sushi platter featuring these delicious sushi rolls, the Ki Spider Roll ($15) soft shell crab, mango, perilla leaves, chives and the Ki Beef Maki ($15) teriyaki-glazed Canadian AAA striploin, scallions, sesame seeds, sweet potato tempura + asparagus.

Atlantic Salmon Kushi

Next was the kushiyaki (skewers) and we shared the flavourful Atlantic Salmon Kushi ($16) and the subtle and delicious Tofu & Eggplant ($10) glazed with Aka-miso.

Black Cod

Jumbo Shrimp

Sweet Potato Wedges

This followed by a couple of Hot Plates, the melt in my mouth Black Cod ($19) saikyo-marinated + broiled with rapini, salmon roe + orange reduction and the tangy Jumbo Shrimp ($16) wok-tossed + tomato rayu-chili sauce along with one side of Sweet Potato Wedges ($8) with wasabi mayo.

The restaurant features one of the most comprehensive Sake lists in the city that I know of, where you will find Sake from Japan as well as locally brewed.

SUIKA

1626 W Broadway, Vancouver

Tel: (604) 730-1678

Web: http://suika-snackbar.com/

Twitter: @SUIKA_IZAKAYA

Advice: Make a reservation as its often busy, bring a friend as sharing is a good idea to taste more dishes.

Sometimes the wait is worth it and after 11 months I finally visited for a very tasty supper. Specializing in Japanese Izakaya, Suika is quite different than their sister restaurant Kingyo, though the flavours are similar. This is a place to socialize over great food and drink, in a lively room that’s fairly noisy with chatter. I loved the ceiling collage of lights as well as the tempting menu and good service.

Snowcrab Sushi

Beef Filet Fried Rice

Corn Kakiage

Grilled Black Cod Cheek

Matcha Brulee

I shared a few dishes with my friend, starting off with the Snowcrab Sushi ($13.80) followed by the flavourful Beef Filet Fried Rice ($11) and the outstanding and crunchy Corn Kakiage ($4.80). Unfortunately the Grilled Black Cod Cheek ($9.80) was disappointing as it was difficult to eat and wasn’t as tender as I had expected. The outstanding frozen Matcha Brulee ($4.80) was the perfect finish to the meal.

Patio Launch Party at Miku Restaurant

On Friday night May 13th, I attended a launch party of sorts, patio launch perhaps, summer menu tasting, though I think it was just an excuse to throw a party, and these people sure know how to throw an amazing party! Guests filled Miku Restaurant inside and outside on the patio as they nibbled and munched their way through delicious aburi sushi, sashimi, crispy tofu salad, ebi fritters, chicken yakitori, Soba Pepperoncino, Sablefish Saikyoyaki, deep fried beef and so much more.

Seigo Nakamura (Owner) and George Katakai (General Manager)

Wine and beer were poured and guests were sipping, though the most popular drink of the night was the Sake Sangria a treat until it was all gone.

Yakitori on the outside barbq

Ebi Fritters

Desserts and more desserts

Pastry Chef Chris Janik and his pastry team delighted all of us with some tasty treats from their new summer menu.

Jaclyn Guillou Trio

Live Jazz by Jaclyn Guillou Trio outside on the patio delighted all.

It’s no secret that Miku is one of my favourites and I was happy to be eating my heart out with them. You can find Miku Restaurant at 1055 West Hastings Street, downtown Vancouver.
