Panang Curry lunch special

Pad-Thai lunch special

This is one of those places that could have been missed, I am so happy that I discovered this hidden gem. Serving up Northern Thai style dishes, this family run restaurant is small in space and big on flavours. My friend Tara was visiting from Montreal and joined me for lunch recently, I had the outstanding Panang Curry lunch special ($9) with chicken (you have a choice of chicken, pork, beef or tofu), coconut milk, lime leaves and peanut sauce and on the lunch special it was served with rice and a spring roll. I was wowed after tasting this curry, the flavours were so good and it’s the best Panang Curry I have had in recent memory. Tara had the Pad-Thai lunch special ($9) stir-fried rice noodles with tamarind sauce, egg, tofu, bean sprouts and ground peanut along with a spring roll, she loved the dish as it was traditionally prepared. The menu features the usual curries, noodle soups along with rice and noodle dishes common to style of cooking you would find in Northern Thailand. They offer 3 different types of rice on the side, coconut rice, steamed jasmine rice and a healthy Thai red-brown rice. Looking forward to my next visit to try the Massaman Curry!

Advice: Go with friends and share the dishes.

Loved the pink theme of the bright and spacious room with high ceilings and decorative light fixtures. Specializing in Thai street food with inventive dishes that will wow your senses.

Spicy Butterfly Butter Jumbo Tiger Prawn

Floating Market

I was in for lunch this week and ate my way through a variety of dishes, to start the Spicy Butterfly Butter Jumbo Tiger Prawn ($6) with butter, swirled egg, curry leaves and peppercorn. Next the Floating Market ($7) was flavorful, spicy and wowed my palate, deep fried spinach tempura and tiger prawns served with a spicy Thai applesauce which has much more than apples in the sauce.

Keang Panang Pia

Pad Thai

Coconut Curry

Pia – Salmon

For the main dishes I shared several and these were my favourites the delicious Keang Panang Pia ($12) Panang curry with salmon; the Pad Thai ($11) with tamarind and soft shell crab; the Coconut Curry ($12) with braised ox-tail and pumpkin; and the delicious and refreshing Pia – Salmon ($12) seared salmon with fresh lemongrass, lime juice topped with cashew nuts and sliced apples.

Pineapple Surprise

Of course dessert is a must for any of my meals as I always enjoy a sweet ending, I had the outstanding and simple Pineapple Surprise ($5) grilled Pineapple topped with vanilla ice cream. My beverage of choice was the cool Thai Iced Tea!

You’ll find the menu to be adventurous and full of flavours from tapas to soups, curries to garden greens, veggies to wok and more!

CHILLI HOUSE

1018 Beach Ave, Vancouver

Tel: 604.685.8989

Web: http://www.thaihouse.com/chilli-house-thai-bistro/

Twitter: @chillihouse

Advice: The restaurant has an ala carte menu as well for eat-in or take out, however the #AYCE menu is better value for the money.

It all started with a tweet and evolved into an #AYCE adventure! I dined with some friends and twitter followers (new friends) recently for dinner, in this case we were all their for #AYCE “all you can eat” Thai food for $16 per person. Around the table was Grace, Bennett, Dilara, Dennis, Eugene and me, most had been before and this was my first time.

Vegetarian Spring Rolls

Chicken Satays with peanut sauce

Chicken and Cashew Nuts

Fried Rice

Stir Fried Vermicelli Rice Noodles

Pad Thai

I had always thought that All you Can Eat meant that it was a buffet, however here they present you with the menu which features a large selection of soup, salads, appetizers, noodle and rice dishes along with dessert. We ordered up about 5 selections in our first round (Vegetarian Spring Rolls with sweet and sour sauce, Chicken Satays with peanut sauce, BBQ Short Ribs, Chicken and Cashew Nuts, Yellow Curry Chicken), following this up with a second round (BBQ Beef Salad, Red Curry with Vegetables, Fried Rice, Pad Thai, Stir Fried Vermicelli Rice Noodles) along with a few more of the popular dishes. I enjoyed everything that I ate, though my favourite dishes were the Chicken and Cashew nuts, Yellow Curry Chicken, Red Curry and Vegetables. This #AYCE included desserts as well and we had both of them, I preferred the Black Glutinous Rice Pudding while others preferred the Tapioca Pudding, it is all a matter of taste and preference, all in all, we all enjoyed our dining adventure together.

BOB LIKES THAI FOOD

Tel: 604-568-8538

Web: http://www.boblikesthaifood.com

Twitter: @boblikethaifood

Advice: no liquor license (one day soon). Cash only.

I had been very curious, as the name of the restaurant was so different, I was curious to meet Bob as I assumed there would be an interesting story. I ventured in for lunch today to taste some authentic Thai, and it was very tasty, wonderful flavours and wonderful service. Of course after my meal I ended up talking to my server who turned out to be the owner about his food which eventually turned into stories about his childhood and the food he ate while growing up in Northern Thailand. The owner is a Filmmaker and Animator by profession who had a dream to open at Thai restaurant and that dream is now reality. The décor is simple, it is the food you are hear for, try the different dishes, share stories with your friends and Bob.

Pad Pik King Chicken lunch set

I had the spicy and flavourful Pad Pik King Chicken lunch set ($7.50) chicken sauteed with red curry paste, green bean, lime leaf, garlic and chilli with rice and greens. Curiousity struck again and I had to try one of their desserts and went with the Maw_Gang ($2.50) that was made with taro root, coconut, egg, palm sugar, baked Thai style, topped with deep fried shallots, this was so different but so YUM!

Thai Cooking Classes at Urban Thai Bistro

With many cooking classes taking place around the city, I wondered what the differences were between each of them, and what made each standout. Some classes include copies of the chefs cookbooks, author signings, have celebrity chefs, or are fundraisers for non profit groups. I decided to set out on my own adventure and partake in some classes around the city.

Here is the thrid of many classes that I will be taking. Urban Thai Bistro is a restaurant located in Vancouver.

Participants and the Chefs

On July 17th, I was invited to participate in a Thai cooking class, all I knew was that it was going to be a hands on experience. This new series of Thai cooking classes is being offered by Urban Thai Bistro in Yaletown to celebrate their 10th year of their restaurant. The idea is brilliant, and I truly hope anyone in the city who loves Thai food will partake in one or all of their classes.

I have been particpating in a series of cooking classes during the past few months and this was one of the most unique I have done thus far. There were 6 of us in the class with 2 chefs so that ratio is very good. At the beginning we all sat at a round table and were provided with a very well organized booklet that described the cooking class, the menu for the days class, a dictionary of Thai herbs along with the recipes of the dishes we were about to create. We were each presented with a fancy apron which we were to keep after the class to use in our own kitchens.

Kaeng Kari - Thai Yellow Curry with Chicken

Each of us assembled at our own cooking stations, all the ingredients were pre-measured and set out in front of us making this step easy for all of us. I began to follow the chefs instructions for the 1st dish and cooked up a storm and voila my Kaeng Kari – Thai Yellow Curry with Chicken was finished.

Making the Soup

Tom Yum Goong Soup

On to the 2nd dish and to cooking the Tom Yum Goong Soup adding a dash of this and a dash of that to make it sweeter or saltier of course depending on each of our individual tastes.

Frying the Spring Roll Stuffing

Separating the Rice Paper Wrappers

Rolling the Spring Rolls

Vegetarian Spring Rolls

On to the 3rd dish, making the Vegetarian Spring Rolls I had to make the stuffing first by frying up the rice noodles, vegetables and spices. I then separated the rice wrappers and filled each with the mixture and then rolled each spring roll carefully, I had quite a knack for this process having had made many cheese blintzes years ago.

Som Tum - Papaya Salad

On to the 4th dish and the last dish of this Thai meal the Som Tum – Papaya Salad. In a huge clay pot bowl, I smashed garlic and red chilli paste along with peanuts and other ingredients.

After we all finished cooking our dishes we regrouped and ate our way through each of the wonderful dishes. This was my first time cooking a home cooked, well almost home cooked Thai meal. Personally I hope you all take one or more of these cooking classes offered by Urban Thai Bistro. The classes are being offered every Saturday morning at 10:30am throughout the Summer, make sure you reserve in advance.

Ticket prices range for the classes. For tickets and info call 604-408-7788, Urban Thai Bistro is located at 1119 Hamilton Street in Yaletown.

The Maenam 1st Anniversary Party

Great night on June 2nd attending the Maenam 1st Anniversary party, Chef/Owner Angus An was in the kitchen preparing some of his Authentic Thai Appetizers and once they were being passed around to the guests I had a chance to eat and enjoy. I loved the appetizer (shown below) that had caramelized coconut inside, such amazing flavour!

Chef Angus An

Chef Angus and his wife Kate started this restaurant a year ago to serve authentic Thai dishes, they both oversea the kitchen and often create new dishes for their patrons. This is one of my favourite restaurants in the city and I always enjoy my visit and their delicious dishes.

Bar Manager - Alicia Grunert

Bartender Alicia Grunert was making some Cocktails including the ‘Green Eye Love’ (shown above) one of the newest cocktails on their summer menu.

Prawn Wonton & Tom Yum Soup

Chicken Panang Curry

Vanilla Tapioca, Mango Panacotta, Chocolate Chili Torte

In for lunch the other day for one of their Lunch plate specials, for ($10), my first course included the Tom Yum Soup and Crispy Won Ton, this followed with the flavourful Chicken Panang Curry with steamed rice and vegetables. I ended off the meal with a dessert sampler of the Vanilla Bean Tapioca, Mango Panecotta and the Chocolate Chili Torte ($4.50). For lunch the $10 special is vast and options abound including your choice of curry or stirfry or noodles/rice. The menu also features an extensive selection of appetizers, soups and seafood entrees such as the Thai Styled 3 Flavoured Fish that I must try on my next visit. The service was wonderful and the decor is rich in red and modern on the inside with a great patio on the outside.

Advice: Their lunch specials look good and are inexpensive. For dinner go with a friend or two and share some dishes.

Panang Kai

Kao Mun

On my way to Vancouver Fashion Week, I stopped in for an early dinner, since I was on my own I was only able to eat a couple of dishes. I reviewed the extensive menu that featured many appetizers, salads, soups, noodles, entrees with chicken, beef, pork and seafood and ended up settling for one of their curries. I had the deliciously flavourful Panang Kai ($12.95) Panang curry with chicken, coconut milk, bell peppers, mushrooms topped with peanut sauce and lime leaves; and the Kao Mun ($2.95) Thai coconut rice served in an authentic rice dish. The service was friendly and I liked the traditional decor with the funky lights throughout.
