HARVEST COMMUNITY FOODS

243 Union Street, Vancouver

Tel: 604-682-8851

Web: http://www.harvestunion.ca

Twitter: @harvestunion

Advice: 11am-8pm Tue-Fri, 10am-6pm Weekends.

It’s a market and eatery that aspires to serving the community with all that is local on the edge of Chinatown and Strathcona. Beginning as ‘this space’ which has evolved through feedback from the local community resulting in the establishment of this grocery/eatery. On the market side they sell dairy and packaged goods such as Beta 5 chocolates, Golden Ears Cheesecrafters cheese, and other gourmand items. On the eatery side they have an ever changing line-up of sandwiches along with chicken steam buns, in the evening they offer a daily ‘braise’.

Chicken & Avocado Sandwich

I had the Chicken & Avocado Sandwich ($8) filled with hot chicken breast and avocado. You will also find a daily soup, and salad offering along with cookies, chocolates and more! They also offer a brunch menu on weekends, you’ll see much more as this space constantly evolves.

Spring Menu Tasting at Market

I was into Market at the Shangri-la Hotel to taste their Spring Menu last week, Chef Wayne Harris presented us with a 6 course menu of some of their new dishes.

Salmon Sashimi

First Course was the Salmon Sashimi with green chilli, pistachio and mint

Blue Fin Tuna Sushi

Second Course was the Ranched Blue Fin Tuna Sushi with crispy rice, spring onion and chipotle

Spring Pea Soup

Third Course was the Spring Pea Soup with parmesan

Crunchy Roasted Halibut

Fourth Course was the Crunchy Roasted Halibut with glazed mushroom, chilli and mint

Hanger Steak

Fifth Course was the Hanger Steak with broccoli, chilli and garlic

Marzipan Layer Cake

Raspberry Charlotte Sundae

Sixth Course was the Marzipan Layer Cake with mixed glazed berries, and sour cherry sorbet and the Raspberry Charlotte Sundae

I loved the colourful green and pink theme of the spring menu that Chef Jean-Georges has created for Market Vancouver, my favourite dishes were the Ranched Blue Fin Tuna Sushi, Spring Pea Soup, Roasted Halibut and the most delicious Marzipan Layer Cake.

THE DIRTY APRON DELI

540 Beatty Street, Vancouver

Tel: 604 879 8588

Web: http://www.dirtyapron.com/del

Twitter: @Dirty_Apron

Advice: Open daily 10am – 8pm.

Beginning as a cooking school, and then a market and now a deli, The Dirty Apron has come full circle. I visited the newly opened deli yesterday and fell in love with the market and the dining room, you could take your sandwich to go or you could have the sandwich to stay and enjoy eating in the dining room like I did.

Baguette Chicken Sandwich

The gourmet sandwiches (they can be grilled) in the cold case all looked good and so did the menu of Baguette sandwiches (all are served hot and made to order), I had the Baguette Chicken Sandwich ($7.99) baguette filled with hot rotisserie style chicken breast that is stewing in a thyme broth, with a tasty sauce making the whole sandwich so Yum! Asides from the sandwiches they also offer up salads, desserts and drinks!

VIJ’S RANGOLI

1488 West 11th Avenue, Vancouver
Tel: 604-736-5711

Web: http://www.vijsrangoli.ca/

Advice: They don’t’ take reservations.

Rangoli1

Rangoli 2

Located next door to the sister restaurant Vij’s, Rangoli is the more casual of the two, a gem that is bright and colourful with an open kitchen for viewing the team of chefs preparing your dishes. It is a restaurant and a market which sells packaged versions of most of the same foods they serve in the restaurant, ideal for you to take home and prepare in minutes. I love dining in and over the years I have had many different dishes including the Black Chickpea, Peas and Onion Cakes in Spicy Coconut Curry ($12.50) with vegetable rice pilaf; the Tamarind and Yogurt Marinated Grilled Chicken ($16) with sprouts salad, rice and naan; and the  Lamb in cumin and light cream curry ($14.50) with salad, rice and naan. The Ginger Lemon Drink ($4.00) and the Mango Pineapple Lassi ($4.50) are both special drinks of the house and both are non-alcoholic. They have a few desserts as well as wine by the glass or bottle. Everything is made here from scratch, they even roast and grind their own spices. The packaged meals in the market are frozen and refrigerated ready-to-eat Indian dishes. They are open daily and it is a great place to go before seeing a play at The Stanley Theatre around the corner.
