Rose Latte

Espresso Macchiatto

Situated next door to their popular Chau Veggie restaurant is a wonderful café with a large communal table that fills the centre of the room. I have visited on a couple of occasions each time visiting after eating noodles next door, I have had the Rose Latte ($4) as well as my usual espresso beverage Espresso Macchiatto ($2.75) the coffee is all from local Republica Coffee Roasters. You will also find Chef Maria’s popular Vegi Pate along with Macarons and other tasty treats.

This is a good spot to spend an afternoon, especially before or after a meal at Chau next door.

Advice: order the home-made potato chips over the tortilla chips, visit the complementary salsa bar. No reservations.

Finding an authentic restaurant serving delicious Mexican food has often been a challenge to find in our city, that is until now. Last night, my friend Ajay Masala Puri joined me for dinner to discover this hidden gem. Some would say it’s off the beaten track, and I’d say it’s in the heart of EastVan’s new restaurant row. The décor is simple and you aren’t here for that anyway, you are here for the authentic Mexican dishes. A couple of families run the place together, having been in the restaurant business back in their home country of Mexico.

Super Vegetariana Huaraches

Cordero al Cilantro (lamb) Huaraches

Home-made Potato Chips

Salsa Bar

Brownie con Lechara

I had the Super Vegetariana Huaraches ($8.75) a home-made corn tortilla topped with delicious black beans, vegetables, panella cheese and more goodness. I made my dish a combo for an extra $2 (you have a choice of soup, coleslaw, potato chips or tortilla chips) which included home-made potato chips and salsas from the salsa bar along with a Horchata sweet cinnamon-flavored milk which was also very good. Ajay had the Cordero al Cilantro (lamb) Huaraches ($8.50) and his was a combo as well. We both then shared the one and only dessert, Brownie con Lechara ($3.75) which was Yum.

You will find an extensive menu featuring many Mexican favourites including Sopes, Tacos, Burritos, Huaraches, Quesadillas and Tortas along with very friendly service and reasonable prices. I am already looking forward to my next visit to try the Smoked Chicken Huaraches!

MATCHSTICK

Advice: Sit at the communal table and meet others.

As many of my friends know, one of my favourite past times is visiting cafes both near and far. My friend and fellow coffee aficionado Alejandro and I visited Matchstick recently to not only people watch as much as catchup over some fine coffee and sweets.

Espresso Macchiato

Apple Walnut Cookie

I had my usual Espresso Macchiato with a delicious out of the oven Apple Walnut Cookie, Alejandro had an Americano along with a muffin. You’ll find a simple menu of fine espresso based beverages, tea as well a selection of house-baked goods. You’ll also find minimal design in the décor with ambiance that will have your mind wandering and this is a café you are going to want to frequent!

LES FAUX BOURGUOIS

Advice: Make an advance reservation
The first time I went to Les Faux I didn’t have a reservation, I called first and was told that I could drop by and snag a table for two by waiting about 30 minutes or so. That advice wasn’t so good, as the place was jammed by the time I got there, my friend and I were lucky to get the last seats at the bar. On my next visit I made a reservation 8 days in advance and this began a journey to a great dining experience. This is a wonderful spot to take a friend who may be celebrating a birthday, or taking someone for a romantic night out, it is a slice of Paris in Vancouver. At $15-$19 dollars a dish the price point is ideal, the servers are relaxed and informative and the atmosphere is very Parisian.
On my first visit I had the Le Steak Frites ($16) with wine reduction sauce, this came with a generous portion of tasty fries which were superb and for dessert the Hot Chocolate and Madeleines ($7) which was like mini Donuts, a little warm with a cup of think hot chocolate for dipping. On my return visit I had the Fillet D’Agneau Poele ($17) and shared the Mixed Olives ($4) with my friend. For dessert we shared the Milk Chocolate Mousse ($7) which was a perfect ending to our meal.
