On Saturday September 19, I spent the evening at UBC Farm enjoying the extravaganza that featured 16 multi-cultural home cooks serving up their recipe of choice to the hundreds of people in attendance.
I loved the Beer and Cheddar Fondue by Carole Morton (Quebec), as well as the Cause Limena by Tiago Morelli (Peru-Ecuador); the Salpicao which is a Brazilian vegetable and Chicken Salad was served by the beautiful son and mother duo, Tiago and Nina de Souza-Jensen (Brazil).
A few more of other delicious savoury dishes were the Adass Polo (lentil rice) by Ahmad Nakheai (Iran), Arroz Tomate Con Repolho by Lyce Rozario (Macau); South Indian Goat Biryani by Syed Arafath Apsar (India).
Nonna Burlo’s Stewed Chicken with Polenta by Lynn Zanatta & Jenny Shipper (Italy) was very good, as was the Isombe by Arielle Uwonkunda (Rwanda), the Japanese Coleslaw by Ayako and Sidney Archer (Japan) was popular as was the hearty Borenkool Stampot by Corrine and Annie De Bruin (Netherlands).
My favourite desserts were the Apple Pyrig by Victoria Lohvin (Ukraine), followed by the Baklava by Mary Stewart (Greece).
There was an energetic dj providing background music while guests mingled about tasting all the delicious food and drink. Guests also received a cookbook upon entry that featured recipes of the dishes from all of the 16 cooks. Both UBC Food Services and Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts students assisted with the cooking of all these wonderful dishes guided by these home cooks.
It was another foodie extravaganza and it was wonderful, organizers behind this ever successful event were Meeru Dhalwala, and Mary Mackay along with an amazing duo. Proceeds of the event were going to support UBC Farm.
