Eating and Exploring in Puerto Vallarta

Another visit to Puerto Vallarta and this time around I decided to stay in the marina and as beautiful and relaxing as it was it was too far from Zona Romantica with the present day traffic. I did however visit the area on a couple occasions and these were my eating highlights:

Tintoque @tintoque  was an unforgettable, memorable fine-dining experience, the restaurant stands as a culinary bridge connecting Banderas Bay’s pre-Hispanic roots with contemporary gastronomy. Spearheaded by acclaimed local chef Joel Ornelas, this Zona Romántica destination operates out of a beautifully restored historic casona right on the banks of the Río Cuale. The restaurant completely reinterprets local fishing-village recipes through sophisticated global techniques, offering an ever-evolving, nine-course seasonal tasting menu alongside spectacular Pacific seafood and regional meats. It is the perfect anchor spot for food travelers looking to explore the complex, elevated side of Puerto Vallarta’s food scene. I had the Carnitas Tamal- so good, Grilled yellowfin tuna and vegetables, 100% Vera Cruz vanilla ice cream with olive oil for a great ending.

Fonda El Cucon @fondaelcucon is located in the heart of the Zona Romántica near the bustling Emiliano Zapata farmers market, the restaurantis an absolute hidden gem for travelers seeking a soulful, completely authentic Mexican meal. This cozy, open-air eatery radiates warmth and rustic charm, welcoming guests with exceptional hospitality that feels like family. The kitchen relies on fresh, market-sourced ingredients to serve up traditional comfort food staples—think exceptionally vibrant green-sauce enchiladas, rich chicken mole, fresh guacamole, and sizzling fajitas. It is a fantastic, unpretentious lunch or dinner stop to experience genuine neighborhood flavor. I had a delicious lunch in the heart of Zona Romantica with my high school friend Sarah at this family run eatery where I had the pescado stew.

MALPASO @malpasomx adds a perfect adventurous detour to any Puerto Vallarta itinerary. Located just a short day-trip north toward Sayulita, reaching this breathtaking, secluded “virgin beach” requires an invigorating 15-to-45-minute trek through a lush jungle trail. Because it is entirely isolated and free of commercial vendors or services, visitors must pack in their own snacks and drinks. It serves as a raw, dramatic sanctuary where the wild Pacific waves crash against caves, palms, and golden sands—offering an unforgettable beachside picnic experience completely disconnected from the main resort crowds. I enjoyed a solo dinner having the Grilled Seabass over potatoes and guacamole.

México Latte @mexicolattepv delivers a stellar, traditional Mexican breakfast paired with exceptional specialty coffee. Located on Avenida Ejército Mexicano, this charming, sunlit café captures the vibrant essence of local hospitality with its bright art and warm, attentive staff. The menu features impeccably prepared morning classics like hearty huevos rancheros and crispy, flavorful chilaquiles topped with delicious homemade salsas. Arriving early is highly recommended to secure a spot on their cozy patio and enjoy an artisanal pour-over made from locally sourced Mexican beans. I visited for some traditional Mexican eats at this festive decorated eatery that has a vast menu of dishes, I had the tasty Enchiladas Suizas!

Campomar @campomarmx Located in the Fluvial Vallarta neighborhood, this restaurant which is part of a local chainis a trendy culinary powerhouse dedicated to authentic, traditional Nayarit-style seafood. Backed by a family tradition that dates back to 1979, the restaurant focuses heavily on premium, sustainably sourced raw materials straight from the Pacific Ocean. The spacious, energetic dining room is famous for its generous portions, beautifully presented ceviches, perfectly executed pulpo a las brasas (charcoal-grilled octopus), and seafood tacos. Complemented by a great wine and spirits list, it is an ideal spot for a lively group dinner or a sophisticated seafood feast. After my WestJet flight was cancelled and all the passengers were put up at a hotel for the night, I enjoyed several complimentary appetizers including the Marlin, and then had the Grilled salmon dinner followed by the Guava pie with vanilla ice cream.

There are many more great restaurants and cafes in the seaside city to discover which I look forward to do on a future visit.
