65th Annual Steveston Salmon Festival July 1

Canada’s biggest little birthday party has a lot to celebrate. This year the festival turns 65 and is looking pretty good for a senior citizen. The 2010 theme is “Red goes green” and will include a number of initiatives to help reduce their carbon footprint.

The Salmon Festival will also feature a special “green zone,” including displays from the City of Richmond and other organizations to help promote positive environmental practices such as waste reduction, curbside composting, energy efficiency, and more. There will be information about community gardening, or how you can grow your own food at home.

The Steveston Salmon Festival is organized by volunteers to honour Canada Day. Last year, nearly 100,000 people attended. This year will feature all the main favourites including the pancake breakfast, parade and our famous salmon bake, which last year served over 2,300 plates of fresh wild sockeye salmon expertly cooked over open alder wood fire pits. It is a fun filled day of live entertainment, complete with dance and musical acts, trade and craft shows, activities for children, and a variety of inflatable slides, bouncers and a variety of adventurous attractions.

The day begins at 6:30 a.m. with the pancake breakfast. The Children’s Bike Parade takes off at 9:30 a.m. and is followed by the Canada Day Parade at 10 a.m., which starts at Garry Point Park and ends along Moncton Street at Railway Avenue.

For complete details including a schedule of events, parade map, road closure notice and parking information, or to find out how you can volunteer, please visit the Steveston Salmon Festival website at www.stevestonsalmonfest.ca.

Advice: Best to share the different platters and items with a friend or two. Use a google map or gps to find them.

Spinach Salad

Global Cheese Platter

From the moment I entered I was breathless, the room was inviting and the place which is hidden away off the beaten path works so well. The server was ever so charming and engaging, explaining the menu in detail and the various dishes on the menu as well as the specials on the large chalk board. The menu is fairly simple though there were many choices for the cheese and meat platters. Started off with the Salad ($8) spinach, pomegranate and sopressta which was not only refreshing but delicious, then shared the Global Cheese platter ($21) with 3 cheeses accompanied with apple slices, grapes, nuts, quince paste and jelly along with bread slices and crisps.

Orange Tart

For dessert shared the Orange Tart ($6) just like a lemon tart, it is an orange tart, very unique and light. With a glass of the Domaine Jean Bousquet Malbec ’07 ($8) this all paired well. Impressive wine list that includes a great selection of whites, reds and rose along with a nice beer list, goes along well with the delightful food offerings. This gem is worth discovering and I look forward to returning to try their fondue and weekend brunch.

Bueniullos

Bueniullos

Located in Steveston area of South Richmond, my friend Sherri took me to this festive Mexican restaurant that was decorated with hanging colorful piñatas on the ceiling, sombreros and other Mexican favors. The menu selection is quite vast including enchiladas, burritos, tacos. I had the Chicken Enchiladas ($10.95) Two lightly fried corn tortillas dipped in our own Pipian sauce then filled with a blend of cheeses, onion, chives and olives on request.(mild); my friend had the Beef Chimichanga ($9.95) a large 12″ tortilla filled with lettuce, cheese, refried beans, & homemade green chile. All rolled up & grilled to perfection. Served with a crisp garden salad. For dessert I had Bueniullos – A scoop of vanilla ice cream sitting in the middle of a crispy sweet flour tortilla drizzled with Cajaeta sauce & icing sugar. (Sweet) and my friend had their Special Dessert – deep fried caramel cheesecake with a scoop of vanilla ice scream. The waitresses provided fast and friendly service, my only complaint was that the complimentary basket of chips and salsa could have had better tasting chips. If you live in or are visiting Richmond and have a craving for Mexican then this Little Mexican Cantina will hit the spot.
