Afternoon Tea at Shangri-La Lounge

Afternoon Tea is an art and should be an extraordinary experience one that you will cherish. Vancouver has some wonderful places for you to indulge in an Afternoon Tea experience. Each of the places is unique in what they offer along with the type of service and selection of sandwiches, pastries and desserts. I am on a journey around the city to find these extraordinary places.

Here is the tenth of many places that I have visited recently. The Shangri-La lounge is located in the Shangri-La Hotel in Vancouver.

I had their Afternoon Tea service for $34.00 per person. First off, I chose my tea of choice from their selection of teas, I chose the “Earl Grey Tea” and my mom had the “English Breakfast Tea”.

3-tiered tray

A three tiered plate arrived to the table as well as a plate of fresh scones, we worked our way through the tiered plate from the bottom to the top, the bottom layer had assortment of sandwiches that included Pickled Cucumber with tarragon cream cheese, Shaved Roast Beef with Shiraz red onion jam, Pacific Candied Salmon with arugula cream cheese, Free Range Egg with watercress on a baby croissant.  The middle layer was filled with assorted canapés from their Asian inspired seasonal menu that included Fortune Chicken and & Wonton Salad, Char Sui Profiteroles, Silk Chive Crepe with Japanese eggplant marmalade. We then enjoyed the homemade raisin Scones served with clotted cream and housemade mango compote. Then it was back to the tiered plate to the top layer to indulge in Gogi Blossom Gelee, Smiling Budha Sesame Ball, and Opera Cake.

Sandwiches

Canapes

Scones

Sweets

My thoughts –From the assortment of sandwiches I liked the Free Range Egg on the croissant the best followed by the Pickled Cucumber with tarragon cream cheese. From the canapés I loved the Fortune Chicken and & Wonton Salad. The scones were moist and absolutely delicious with the mango compote and a dot of cream. From the assortment of sweets, we both loved the Opera Cake! The experience was relaxing and we were able to slowly make our way thru the tea service.

Six signature Spice Market dishes have been added to the dinner menu.  Available a la carte, C$10 – C$30, or as a tasting menu, C$68, these six dishes top Spice Market’s list of favourite items with the ingredients readily available in Vancouver:

Ovaltine Kulfi, Caramelized Banana and Spiced Milk Chocolate Sauce

Spice Market NYC, located in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District, was inspired by the street food Jean-Georges enjoyed while traveling in Southeast Asia.  Since opening in 2004, the cuisine and lively atmosphere of the famed New York eatery has transported diners from Vietnamese street markets to a Thai food stalls.

Market by Jean-Georges is the first restaurant in Canada for the three-star Michelin chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten and the signature restaurant of Shangri-La Hotel, Vancouver.  Market, open seven days a week from breakfast through dinner, is located on the hotel’s third floor and accessible through the hotel or directly off Alberni Street.  Reservations can be made by telephone at (604) 695-1115 or via the restaurant’s website – www.marketbyjgvancouver.com
