Celebrate Los Muertos at Zocalo

Chef Tanya Shklanka

One of the most joyful and popular holidays in Mexico is ‘Dia de Muertos’ (Day of the Dead). The fiesta, which traces its roots back to the indigenous Aztec and Maya cultures, was originally celebrated in August. After the Spanish conquest, the Catholic Church moved it to the present date of November 2nd in an attempt to assimilate the ‘pagan’ celebration into the Christian holy days of All Hallows Eve and All Saints Day (Oct.31 and Nov.1). However, Los Muertos caught on with all strata of Mexican society and it grew into the wildly popular holiday it is today where friends and family gather to honour the dead with special meals and family shrines.

It’s a meeting place where friends and family gather to share a meal, indulge in gossip, check out everyone else and be entertained. In other words, it is the heart of every Mexican community. In celebration of Los Muertos, Vancouver’s Zocalo will be offering a very special three-course menu for the value price of $25 per person. It has been created in commemoration of ‘El Santo,’ Rodolfo guzman Huerta, Mexico’s most famous ‘luchador’ (masked wrestler – think Jack Black in Lucha Libre). El Santo came from the state of Hidalgo and Zocalo’s Los Muertos menu reflects dishes that he is known to have loved.

Main Street’s Zocalo is planning their 3rd Annual Los Muertos festival with a special menu created for the occasion. The delicious food is created by Chef/Owner Tanya Shklanka and her talented group of Mexican cooks and is guaranteed to put you in a festive mood and enliven your palate. For starters diners have a choice of Pozole Verde, a traditional soup served at weddings, family gatherings and fiestas, or Chile Relleno de Hongos which is a roasted poblano chile filled with portobello mushroom, onion and tequila ragout dressed with a pasilla chile sauce.

For mains there is a choice between Barbacoa de Borrego or Pollo con Mole Negro. Barbacoa de Borrego is melt-in-your mouth slow-cooked lamb accompanied by salsa verde, guacamole and homemade corn tortillas. Pollo con Mole Negro is Mexico’s answer to France’s Coq au Vin. Chicken stewed in a traditional sauce of black chiles, nuts, spices and tomatoes resulting in a flavourful dish served with rice and the ubiquitous warm corn tortillas.

Life is sweet and so is the end of this meal. The Mexicans invented chocolate and named it ‘food of the gods.’ What could be more heavenly than Hot Coochie y Pan de Muertos? Homemade Mexican hot chocolate with a bit of kick and accompanied by traditional Pan Muertos, a traditional sweet bread flavoured with orange and anise. The other choice is Capirotada – a Mexican style bread pudding chock-a-block full of goodies such as dried cranberries, blueberries roasted hazelnuts and panela cheese suffused with spiced piloncillo (raw brown sugar) syrup. Yum.

El Santo’s favourite libation was a cold Negra Modelo and that is the recommended pairing with the Los Muertos menu. If cerveza is not your drink of choice, Zocalo Los Muertos Menu also offers a special tequila pairing to accompany each course for an additional $20. The restaurant stocks Vancouver’s largest selection of tequilas; or you may prefer sangria, a Latino-inspired cocktail or a selection from their Carta de Vinos available by the glass, half litre and bottle.

When you have a holiday as fun and flavourful as Los Muertos, it’s a pity it lasts a day or two. The good news is that at Zocalo Restaurant, the Los Muertos menu will be available for 15 days starting November 1st straight through to November 15th. In addition to the special menu, Zocalo Restaurant will feature a traditional Shrine and to get things off to a festive start on November 1st, there will be a Mariachi band to entertain. Bring a little Mexican warmth to dreary November and live it up at Zocalo Restaurant with Los Muertos, November 1st through 15th. Reservations recommended 604-677-3521.

The BEST Taco List

Tacos have been gaining quite a following in Vancouver. I have been eating tacos at many of the Mexican restaurants in the city and here is my list of the Best Tacos in Vancouver.

#1 goes to La Taqueria 322 W. Hastings for the best authentic Mexican tacos in the city that are made from the freshest and locally sourced, free-range meats, sustainable fish and organic vegetables. My favourites are the chicken mole and crema corn.

#2 goes to La Hacienda 1075 Howe Street for the great fillings including crema corn, chicken and steak.

#3 goes to Bandidas Taqueria 2781 Commercial Drive for the best Vegetarian tacos and their roasted pineapple.

#4 goes to Don Guacamoles 1333 Robson Street for delicious steak tacos.

#5 goes to Dona Cata 5076 Victoria Drive for their tacos with a great selection of salsas to top it all off.

#6 goes to Lolita’s 1326 Davie Street for their halibut with mango salsa, and the chicken with salsa verde.

#7 goes to Cactus Club (multiple restaurants) for their fish tacos.

Chicken Mole tacos (top), Pescado taco (bottom)

I love Mexican food and am always quite excited to learn of a new Mexican restaurant opening in the city. It is about time that a cool new authentic taco joint has opened in Vancouver.  La Taqueria is authentic Mexican and they specialize in tacos but not just any tacos, as it is all about the fillings and what goes inside, all fresh and locally sourced when available, free-range meats, sustainable fish and organic vegetables and the right amount of spice. Since I love Mole, I ordered the Pollo Con Mole ($2.50) maple hills chicken with chocolate mole sauce on soft corn tortilla and the Pescado ($2.50) grilled seasonal fish with pico de gallo on soft corn tortilla, there are many other tacos on the menu, 12 different toppings to choose from (including the 4 vegetarian choices)., each one is $2.50 so you can mix and match or order a combo of 4 tacos for $9.50. If you decide to sit inside at one of the bar stools, the place is small and limited in seating. La Taqueria offers 3 different salsas and two kinds of pickles these include Chile de Arbol, Chipotle and Verde, and Red onion and Jalapeno pickles – at no extra charge and you will find them behind the bar.  The guys who have created this taco joint are already on their way to being successful with their venture since the place has been packed since the day they opened. Hopefully they’ll open a couple more of these taqueria’s around the city and spice up the city with more of their great Mexican eats.

Bueniullos

Bueniullos

Located in Steveston area of South Richmond, my friend Sherri took me to this festive Mexican restaurant that was decorated with hanging colorful piñatas on the ceiling, sombreros and other Mexican favors. The menu selection is quite vast including enchiladas, burritos, tacos. I had the Chicken Enchiladas ($10.95) Two lightly fried corn tortillas dipped in our own Pipian sauce then filled with a blend of cheeses, onion, chives and olives on request.(mild); my friend had the Beef Chimichanga ($9.95) a large 12″ tortilla filled with lettuce, cheese, refried beans, & homemade green chile. All rolled up & grilled to perfection. Served with a crisp garden salad. For dessert I had Bueniullos – A scoop of vanilla ice cream sitting in the middle of a crispy sweet flour tortilla drizzled with Cajaeta sauce & icing sugar. (Sweet) and my friend had their Special Dessert – deep fried caramel cheesecake with a scoop of vanilla ice scream. The waitresses provided fast and friendly service, my only complaint was that the complimentary basket of chips and salsa could have had better tasting chips. If you live in or are visiting Richmond and have a craving for Mexican then this Little Mexican Cantina will hit the spot.

Milanesa Chicken Sandwich and Potato Chips

Milanesa Chicken Sandwich

Milanesa Chicken Sandwich

With a line-up out the door at this gourmet Mexican sandwich shop I knew that I had to try it. I had no idea what a Mexican sandwich was and how it differed from a regular sandwich. After eating one of these delicious sandwiches, I now know the difference. First of all it is the bread, a special type of bread/roll ‘Torta’ originating from Mexico, then it is the type of toppings added to the sandwiches that make them ever so special and tasty. They have an intriguing menu of sandwiches that you haven’t seen in Vancouver yet. I ordered the “Milanesa” ($8.75) breaded chicken breast fillet, tomato, cabbage, pickled onions, jalapenos, guacamole, and refried beans (it also comes with butter and mayo, but I skipped those 2 toppings). I ran into my friend Marcus, who happens to be a restauranter and we dined together, he ordered the same sandwich and some of their homemade potato chips ($2) which I tried and enjoyed. To drink I had a Tamarind Aguas Frescas ($2). Many items on the menu are tempting and next time I will try the Vegetarian. You order these sandwiches by taking a marker and an empty brown bag and mark which sandwich you want to order and what you want or don’t want on the sandwich, add your name etc, then you take it to the cashier (clever way of making sure they make exactly what you ordered). They make their own soups, actually everything is homemade from the bread to the guacamole to the desserts. I only wish that I had room after the sandwich to try both of their desserts as both the Tres Leches cake and the Mexican Brownie looked good.

Steak Mulitas

The place is always packed with people who love great Mexican food from locals to esl students missing the food from back home, After you order you will receive a long plate of complimentary tortilla chips, along with a few salsas from spicy to not so spicy. The menu is fairly large and the entrees are not so typical, my favorites here are the Chicken Mole ($18) grilled chicken breast, covered with their outstanding mole sauce served with rice and beans; along with the Steak Mulitas ($8) grilled tortillas with pieces of flank steak, cheese, onions and more. I love the Mango Juice ($4) a tall glass filled with fresh Mango juice. The place is high energy, great music, good service and all around good fun.

Advice: Don’t be afraid to mix and match the tacos, weekend brunch can be quite popular and you can expect to wait awhile for a table.

With an eclectic array of customers this vegetarian Mexican restaurant was buzzing with diners tonight when my friend Alejandro and I visited. We both thought we would try something different and both ended up ordering the same dishes. We kind of mixed and matched and ordered the Estelle tacos ($6.50 for 3 tacos) Roasted pineapple, black beans, cheese, fresh red salsa, romaine & sour cream on handmade corn tortillas and the Ronny Russel tacos ($6.50 for 3 tacos) Roasted yams and onions, guacamole, black beans, green salsa, purple cabbage, & pumpkin on handmade corn tortillas. We also split an order of the tortilla chips ($4) and home made guacamole. For drinks I had the Cranberry Soda ($3) and he had Lemonade ($3). The food is fresh and good which matched the friendly service.

After our meal we were both still talking about the flavours and the roasted pineapple.
