4th Annual Best of the West

best of the west 2014 1

Last night I attended this wonderful event hosted by the Harmony Arts Festival in West Vancouver along with House Wine.  The weather was beautiful, the backdrop of the local mountains and Burrard Inlet were magnificent, guests mingled eating delicious bites from North Shore restaurants and sipped on BC Wine.

Hot Chefs Cool Jazz and Alex Chen

Chef Alex Chen – Bocuse d’or Canada Team 2013

A few months ago, I attended the spectacular Hot Chefs Cool Jazz evening at the Delta Burnaby Hotel were guests tasted bites from some of the city and area best chefs and their restaurants.  This was a wine and gastronomic experience that delighted everyone, and supported Chef Alex Chen and Bocuse d’Or Canada.

The chefs who supported Chef Alex Chen at this fundraiser

This event which was the 7th annual was a fundraiser to send the Canadian team of Bocuse d’or to represent Canada in 2013 at this international competition in France to compete against 23 other countries top chefs.  Alex Chen is currently the Culinary Architect for Moxie’s and he is the Chef Candidate to lead his team in 2013 to represent Canada.

Over 17 restaurants and their top chefs took part in this event, these are some of the notable food selections from the evening. Entertainment by LeftCoast Jazz Featuring Marie Hui. Zahra Alani of the CBC graciously hosted the evening.

Competing at the level demanded by the Bocuse d’Or requires limitless patience, extreme dedication and thousands of hours spent in training and coaching. First and foremost, though it needs a chef who can compete shoulder to shoulder with the best chefs in the world and whose talents and unwavering commitment set them apart, for Canada that chef is Alex Chen. Chef Chen grew up and fell in love with cooking in Vancouver. His career has taken him across North America with positions in some of the continents finest hotels including Four Seasons Toronto, Four Seasons Chicago and most recently as the Executive chef of The Beverly Hills Hotel and Bungalows: he has now returned to Vancouver to prepare for the world’s most prestigious culinary competition.

Blue Mountain Wines at Seasons

Christine Fawcett of Keystone Fine Wines

On August 17th, I attended a tasting of Blue Mountain Wines paired along with bites from Seasons in the Park!

Blue Mountain Vineyard is located in Okanagan Falls, BC; Christine Fawcett of Keystone Fine Wines was the speaker and she talked about each of the wines and pairing with these three wines Gold Label Brut Sparkling, 2008 Pinot Blanc, and 2008 Pinot Noir.

Halibut Cakes

My favourite pairing was the Blue Mountain 2008 Pinot Noir with the Australian Lamb Chop, cabernet demi-glace.

Mystery Kitchen Tour at PICA

Chef Angus An of Maenam

I took part in a Mystery Kitchen Tour on June 27th that was held at Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts on Granville Island that featured some of the top chefs from around Vancouver and BC who created some amazing dishes for everyone to taste. Each dish was paired to a wine or two and guests mingled about going from kitchen to kitchen tasting and sipping. There were 8 kitchens and 8 mystery chefs who created these wonderful dishes for tasting.

Chef Neil Wyles - Hamilton Street Grill

This fundraiser was to raise money for the Canadian Chefs Congress where 500 chefs from across Canada will gather on Vancouver Island to talk sustainable seafood together. Here are some of my favourite dishes sampled during the evening.

Chef An’s dish - Banana Blossom Salad

Chef Bond's - Venision with porcini mushoom and mixed potato puree.

Chef Ned Bell's - Summer Salad with roasted tomatoes and peppers, belgian endive, local goat cheese, toasted walnuts, dehydrated pepper powder, and cucumber,

Chef Taylor of Cibo - Panelle: chickpea fritters with buffalo mozzarella and smashed peas and fava beans.

Chef Scott Jaegar - Seared Albacore Tuna with compressed cucumber and watermelon salad, yuzu gel, coriander sheets, and puff rice.

Chef Ned Bell's - roasted tomatoes

A variety of tasty desserts were served towards the end of the evening created by the PICA pastry team.

The team of Mystery Chefs appeared to have good time as well as the guests.

I enjoyed this wonderful tasting event and the challenge as the mystery unfolded.
