Dine Out Vancouver 2013 -picks & tips

This year’s Dine Out Vancouver runs January 18 – February 3rd and features an extensive selection of unique events in addition to prix-frixe meals that all the participating restaurants will be offering. The prix-fixe menu are in one of three price points – $18, $28, or $38. The full list of restaurants and menus can be viewed and booked from here, so bookmark this page and come on back often to see the list of participating restaurants before you make your reservations.

Key Events: A blend of old favourites (such as Street Food City; Plated & Paired at the Public Market; Secret Supper Soirée; and Act I, Eat 1) and new additions like The Grape Debate (a lively wine debate with B.C. wine tastings); Tea Cocktails & Tapas (tea-infused cocktail class paired with tasty tapas at the Urban Tea Merchant); and an experiential Speaker Series at Edible Canada on Granville Island (taste cheese, wine, beer, bitters and more under the guidance of a local expert). If you love Art and Music, make sure you check out La Musique: Food, Art & Music and if you love wine and food, check out the Railtown Supper Party at the Vancouver Urban Winery.

Menus: Three-course, prix fixe menus priced at $18, $28 and $38 (suggested BC VQA wine pairings courtesy of Wines of British Columbia available at additional cost). Restaurant menus will be revealed and reservations open on January 7.

Hotels: Participating hotels will offer rooms priced at $78, $108 and $138 per night. Keep an eye out for special Dine Out packages, too. If you are planning to visit Vancouver for any of the Dine Out events, here is the list of hotels.

First off – some tips – choose different times than you would normally dine out, by selecting earlier 5pm or later after 8:30pm times you will have a better chance in getting in to some of the popular restaurants than hitting refresh on the 6-7pm time slot. If you have kids and you need to get a baby sitter so that you can enjoy date night, change the night and look at Monday-Wednesday so that you get the restaurant that you want as opposed to settling for the restaurant you don’t want on a Friday or Saturday night.

Many of the restaurants are offering BC VQA Wine Pairings as well as Granville Island  Beer Pairings for an extra cost with the meals, and in many of the restaurants the pairings provide great value.

A Night of Don Julio Tequila

Making the Spanish Raindrop - Anejo

Making the Spanish Raindrop - Anejo

The Don Julio ‘Height of Craftmanship’ event hosted by Goldfish Pacific Kitchen in Yaletown on November 16 was a great success and a lot of fun. There were stations scattered about the room which offered up Luxury Drops of 3 signature tequilas Blanco, Repasado and Anejo along with the bar featuring a couple of cocktails made with the Don Julio Tequilas. Goldfish chefs had a spectacular set-up of delicious seafood, duck, beef appetizers to pair up with the Tequilas of choice.

I had the opportunity to meet Brian Van Flandern who is the Global Ambassador for Don Julio. World renowned Michelin Three-star mixologist Brian Van Flandern has been a professional bartender in New York City for over 18 years. In 2004 Brian helped open Chef Thomas Keller’s now famous restaurant PER SE as the head mixologist. Applying Chef Keller’s philosophy of flavor profiling to cocktails taught Brian to create well-balanced food friendly cocktails. His recreation of the classic Gin and Tonic (he makes his own tonic water with quinine powder imported from Brazil) has garnered national attention. In 2008 Tanqueray Ten Gin named Brian one of the top ten bartenders in the world and was hired as Diageo’s first ever Global Tequila Ambassador. And in 2009 Travel and Leisure Magazine named Brian one the Top Ten Hotel Bartenders in the World.

A group of us had the opportunity to hear Brian tell us about the company and the Tequilas that are produced, we were able to taste the 1942 which as a bottle would sell for about $144 CAD. Don Julio established the first tequila distillery in 1942 and to commemorate that very special year, they have created Don Julio 1942 a unique and limited edition. Its golden line and perfect clarity is appealing and a testament to its purity. The aroma is sweet and ripe with layers of agave and notes of ripe apple and oak. The taste is smooth, rich and clean with oak and vanilla finish. Don Julio 1942 will appeal to both connoisseurs and collectors of fine tequila.
