Advice: Counter service.

This is second location of the Italian Kitchen spin-off featuring a casual self-serve counter and seating for 40, offering take-out or leisurely dine-in meal. There is a large communal table for solo diners or others who want to eat with friends. They offer freshly baked scones, pastries and breakfast sandwiches to start off the morning along with a coffee beverage line-up. Lunch and dinner menu options include a variety of antipasti, charcuterie, salads, soups, specialty paninis, and strombolis.

Meatballs

Pine Nut Tarts & Fruit Croistata

Apricot Croistata and other pastries

I have dined in and had take-out on a few occasions and have tried several of their dishes including their notable Meatballs, Couscous, Farro, Tuna Sandwich, as well as several of the baked goodies.

They also offer hearty pastas and an array of traditional meat, seafood and poultry dishes, such as Veal Milanese, roasted chicken and salmon.

Advice: multi-course tasting menus, you can ask to have the chef create you a customer tasting menu.

Windset Farms Fresco Cucumber Gazpacho

Chilled Dungeness Crab Cannelloni

With a star chef at its helm, my friend Nikki Caine joined me to explore and enjoy the chef’s tasting menu as I knew we were in for a culinary journey. Chef Thomas Heinrich is the visionary culinary master who is creating artful masterpieces on the plate. Our 1st course was the Windset Farms Fresco Cucumber Gazpacho in refreshing ginger coconut gelee. The next course was the outstanding Chilled Dungeness Crab Cannelloni with English pea, meyer lemon and mint where the presentation was perfection.

Spring, Green Garlic Grits with Scallop

Pan seared Branzino

Galbi marinated Pork Jowl

Slow Roasted Lamb

The journey continued with the next course, a taste of Spring, Green Garlic Grits with Scallop which was delicious, this followed by the Pan seared Branzino with celery noodles and carrot reduction with an oregano citrus emulsion served to us on a mirrored slab. From there the flavours exploded with the Galbi marinated Pork Jowl with Asian pear, fiddle heads, lotus root and edible flowers, the sauce was heavenly. On to the 6th course it was another stunning plate with the the delicious Slow Roasted Lamb with mustard and fennel streusel and a pomegranate gastrique along with edible flowers.

Braised Rhubarb

We finished off our impressive meal with the Braised Rhubarb with white chocolate meringue, ginger and pink peppercorns and green strawberries, this dessert was the perfect ending with more stunning flavours. I am looking forward to many return visits and to follow the seasons with Chef Thomas Heinrich leading the way.

MAGDA’S RESTAURANT

6345 Fraser Street, Vancouver

Tel: 604-322-1001

Web: www.magdasrestaurant.ca

Twitter: n/a

Advice: No reservations.

Some of my friends and I often get together on Sunday mornings for breakfast at various eateries around the city, each of us takes turns on suggesting restaurants in our respective neighborhoods or places that we had been to previously. My friend Alejandro suggested Magda’s for a recent breakfast gathering as he had enjoyed a dinner their previously, Jason and I joined to try some of the authentic Venezualan specialties.

Arepas

Carnegie Mechada vegetarian

Pupusas

Dulce de Lechoza

I had the Arepas ($7.95) with chicken & cheese, a delicious Venezuelan specialty 100% corn flour bun that is grilled and baked and is gluten-free as well; Alejandro had the Carnegie Mechada vegetarian ($7.95) Vegan Shredded Beef and Jason had the Pupusas($7.95) which is a Salvadoran specialty not listed on the menu, you have to ask and they will make it for you. We then shared the Dulce de Lechoza ($3.95) a caramelized papaya dessert.

Dining here was quite a wonderful experience, we discovered that all the tables were numbered which is great if you ever forget where you are seated, we met people sitting at the tables around us who talked up their dishes which tempted us to try more on a future visit. The menu is filled with Latin American specialties which is the star of this restaurant, I would suggest you over-look the Westernized dishes such as the hamburgers, sandwiches and omelets and try the traditional specialties that makes this restaurant a hidden gem that is worth your discovery

Advice: No reservations. Breakfast is served until 4 pm weekdays and 5 pm on weekends.

Sometimes it can take years to visit a restaurant which has been around for years, the Roundel has been serving the East Village neighborhood for over 49 years. I visited for the first time with a group of friends for Breakfast, it’s a fun place especially on a Sunday morning. They make everything from scratch using wholesome ingredients in this fresh food diner.

Tofu Veggie Scramble

I had the Tofu Veggie Scramble ($8.50) which was delish filled with vegetables, potatoes and salad, my friends Alexei, Alejandro, Jason and Yaniv had a variety of egg dishes including the Benny, Omelets and such as well a couple ordered raspberry milkshakes which are made with 4 scoops of ice cream.

They have got burgers for lunch as well as rolled tortillas, salads and sandwiches and at dinner you will find a selection of Mexican dishes such as the Mango Brie Quesadilla which I can’t wait to try on my next visit.

Advice: Located inside the River Market on the main floor. Lots of seating in the market area.

BBQ Platter

As a lover of BBQ, I have visited many eateries in the Southern USA over the years which had great BBQ, from the sauces to the meats. I fell in love with Re-Up’s street cart when they opened back in 2010, now they have bumped it up a notch, smoking their meats in house, putting BBQ on the map in New Westminster. I visited recently, hopping on the skytrain from downtown Vancouver headed for the River Market on the waterfront for some delish BBQ. I had the BBQ Platter ($10)  featuring Pulled Pork with House Coleslaw, Buttermilk Mashed Potatoes and home-made biscuit.

You can order the platters or sandwiches with the pulled pork, beef brisket, smoked chicken or ribs. They have all sorts of different sides from the black bean and corn chili, to the biscuits and mashed potatoes. Whether you are feeding yourself or your family, this is a great spot to satisfy your BBQ craving!

LA PENTOLA DELLA QUERCIA

350 Davie St., Vancouver

Tel: 604-642-0557

Web: www.lapentola.ca

Twitter: @La_Pentola

Advice: Go with friends or family, and order familia style and share.

Bread and Olive oil

It’s no secret that I love Kitsilano’s La Quercia, and have loved Chef Adam Pegg and Chef Lucais Syme’s eatery since day one. Along comes the duo’s second Northern Italian eatery of which I can’t compare in just. Dining in this large room is divine, it however is a very different experience than their first restaurant.  The room has an open feeling with its dark wooden furniture, shiny copper pots in glass display cases, with white wooden finishes and cool lights.

Roasted bone marrow, salsa verde, crostini

Eggplant terrine, prawns, agro-dolce tomato

Souffle di parmigiano, zucchini crudo

My friend and I shared the delicious Roasted bone marrow, salsa verde, crostini ($13); along with the delish Eggplant terrine, prawns, agro-dolce tomato ($13) along with the outstanding Souffle di parmigiano, zucchini crudo ($13) which has to be my favourite dish on the menu.

Porchetta Tortellini, sage butter  (left) & Kale and ricotta pansotti, walnut sauce (right)

Polenta Gnocchi, cheese fonduta, mushroom

Next was the Porchetta Tortellini, sage butter ($13) and the delicious Kale and Ricotta Pansotti, walnut sauce ($12) and the delicious Polenta gnocchi, cheese fonduta, mushroom ($13).

Trout involtini, zucchini trifolat

Next was the flavourful Trout involtini, zucchini trifolat ($26) for our secondi which was the perfect size to share after our selection of antipasti and primi.

Hazelnut Semi Freddo

To finish off the meal we opted for a taster of their Hazelnut Semi Freddo (desserts change frequently) which was the perfect finish to an outstanding meal. If you are looking to dine solo or with your romantic companion and are ok with booking at least a month ahead go to La Quercia, if you are looking to dine with family or friends and are spontaneous in your dining adventure then you best get over to La Pentola pronto. I am looking forward to trying out brunch for my next visit as that menu looks intriguing.

BC Hazelnut Pancakes

I had the delicious BC Hazelnut Pancakes ($8.95) with local apple-aged white cheddar fritters, local honey whipped cream and vanilla syrup. Another dish that I must try on the next visit is their Fried Chicken & Waffles which is usually available on Fridays.  They have breakfast & brunch entrees, combos, hot and cold drinks they also have a large extendable awing to keep you dry while ordering and eating on those rainy days.

Advice: Order the bread on its own or a dish with the bread it is a must.

Omelette of the day with potatoes, salad and bread

From French pastries to bistro, this wonderful French café changed course and developed more of a following for their fine French fare. After months of friends telling me to visit for breakfast, I did just that recently having the Omelette of the day ($9.95) with potatoes, salad and their French bread. My friends who are regular diners there had the Lyon Breakfast with 2 poached eggs, mushrooms, bacon, pearl onions, spinach, potatoes, and red wine sauce, salad; and the Basque Breakfast 2 sunny side up eggs, piperade, chorizo, aioli sauce, potatoes, salad of which they both love.
