Advice: No seats, call for days open.

For many who either have wheat allergies or are seeking gluten-free baked goods had been hard to find until recently. My Goodness! Is a gluten and wheat free kitchen specializing in breads and crackers, biscotti, cookies, granola, and other baked goods.

Carrot Cake

Almond Biscotti

My favourite here is the Carrot Cake ($6.25 small) with cream cheese icing you won’t even know that it is gluten-free, it is moist and delicious. I have also tried the Almond Biscotti as well as some of the other baked goods. They also carry a variety of gluten- and wheat-free flour mixes for your own cooking and baking.

Owner, Arlene is not only wonderful to chat with, she is a valuable resource for all things gluten-free.

BIGSBY THE BAKEHOUSE

4894 Mackenzie Street, Vancouver

Advice: Call ahead to order Challah for Friday.

Baguettes

Tucked into the Mackenzie Heights neighborhood with little fanfare, I had heard about this wonderful bakery café from my friend and fellow writer Rhonda May. Rhonda had raved about their breads and Bigsby was quickly on my list to discover. The cafe is owned by Earl Morris and family, who are the original owners of the Red Onion in Kerrisdale, I talked to Earl about why he wasn’t on twitter and he chuckled that he didn’t think he needed to be, time will tell. The rustic loaves of bread along with their baguettes are outstanding, as well are the baked goods.

Vegetarian Sandwich

Grilled Cheese

Peanut Butter & Jam Cookie

I have had the Vegetarian Sandwich ($8.95) that was filled with grilled vegetables, served with carrots and chips; as well as the Grilled Cheese ($5.50) served with carrots and chips. In addition to an ever changing line-up of sandwiches you will find a selection of sweets and treats, one of which that I loved was the Peanut Butter & Jam Cookies ($2.50).

You will be surprised on each visit where you may find cinnamon rolls, cookies, coffee cake and so much more. I’ve been told they have the best Challah in the city, though I have yet to get my hands on a loaf.

TRAFIQ CAFÉ & BAKERY

4216 Main Street, Vancouver

Tel: 604-648-2244

Web: http://www.trafiq.ca/

Advice: Custom cakes available (call ahead)

This café is a magnet for drawing in neighborhood regulars and others that commute across town for a taste of Paris. I adore the communal tables where people can enjoy sandwiches or baked goods along with coffees. I have visited a couple of times recently and love the ambiance as well as the delicious eats and sweets.

Lemon Chicken Ciabatta & Roasted Yam Soup

I have had the Lemon Chicken Ciabatta ($7.95) with lemon aioli, tomato, lettuce, chicken breast along with a soup of the day which was the delicious Roasted Yam Soup ($5.95).

Chunky Monkey

Killer Brownie

I have also had their outstanding and heavenly Chunky Monkey ($3.25) think bananas, chocolate and brioche as well as the Killer Brownie ($2.50) that is full of chocolatey goodness.

Walnut Coffee Cake

Dulce Croissant

Vanilla Éclair

On another visit I had the moist and delicious Walnut Coffee Cake ($3.25) as well as Dulce Croissant ($2.50) filled with dulce cream along with the Vanilla Éclair ($2.75) topped with chocolate and filled with vanilla cream.

Espresso Macchiato

Baked goods always go well with an Espresso Macchiato ($2.70) and their coffee beans are from Los Beans Trading Co a local roaster.

The French-inspired patisserie also bakes their own rustic, naturally leavened breads by the ‘dough boys’ as they are known, the breads are offered fresh from the oven each morning at 9. The ʻcake ladiesʼ as they are known are baking beautiful and sumptuous cakes including a Confetti cake for the kids and adults alike.
