Roaming Dragon Tasting

Jory Simkin –co-owner (R) & Kristine Hancock – friend (L)

Roaming Dragon held a menu tasting party last week where they showcased 13 new dishes on their Street Food and catering menus to a packed house at District 319. There were stations set up around the room serving up everything from Ceviche to Tacos, as well as servers passing around all the other dishes.

Ceviche station

Guests were treated to Lychee Infused Vodka Cocktails as well as a Mocktails version which I enjoyed. There was also wine and beer to round out the thirst quenchers. Over at the Ceviche station people were sampling and sampling.

Serving Indonesian Beef Rendang Poutine

I sampled most of the dishes including the fave of the night the Indonesian Beef Rendang Poutine which happens to also be in my Poutine Challenge.

Malaysian Spicy “Debil” Chicken Taco

My other favourites included the Malaysian Spicy “Debil” Chicken Taco, Korean Short Rib Taco, Roaming Dragon “Chop” Salad and the Thai Dragon Burger.

Advice: Take a friend or two to share and try more dishes. Patio in the rear.

I have always had a curiousity about Nepalese cuisine, I was happy to discover Gurkha recently opening upstairs in the house that sits above Davie street. The interior is decorated with carvings from Nepal and the bar looks like a bamboo hut. As you enter you are greeted by gracious servers or Chef Shiva himself welcoming you to their house. Gorkha is a district of Nepal and where the term Gurkha came from, here you will have an authentic Nepali meal.

Potato Salad

Gurkha Platter

Taas

My friend Alvin joined me to share some of the Nepali dishes, he is vegetarian so I then shared some of his experiencing the best of both worlds, meat and vegetarian. We each started with the Potato Salad with crispy puffed rice and then I had the Gurkha Platter – Soybean salad, Kathmandu Sekuwa, (chicken & lamb) followed by the delicious Taas: Special Nepali snack prepared with grilled lean chicken/lamb meat and served with puffed rice, cucumber, pickle and spicy sauce.

Momos

Paalungo

I then enjoyed the Momos a Tibetan dish of steamed dumplings filled with diced chicken while Alvin had the delicious Nepali Paalungo – fresh spinach leaves sautéed in seeds (cumin, mustard and fenugreek), dry red chilli and fresh garlic cloves.

Gorkhali Khasi

Jhaaneko Daal

On to the entrees that were all priced between $10-$12 each, I had the delicious Gorkhali Khasi – goat in a Nepali curry while Alvin had the Jhaaneko Daal lentils soaked and cooked with Nepali spices and tempered with onion, cumin seeds and garlic.

Mango Lassi

Dudhbari

Chai Creme Brûlée

We both then had a refreshing Mango Lassi followed by a couple of traditional desserts to finish a wonderful meal. My favourite of the two was the Dudhbari followed by the Chai Creme Brûlée.

Advice: 11am-8pm Tue-Fri, 10am-6pm Weekends.

It’s a market and eatery that aspires to serving the community with all that is local on the edge of Chinatown and Strathcona. Beginning as ‘this space’ which has evolved through feedback from the local community resulting in the establishment of this grocery/eatery. On the market side they sell dairy and packaged goods such as Beta 5 chocolates, Golden Ears Cheesecrafters cheese, and other gourmand items. On the eatery side they have an ever changing line-up of sandwiches along with chicken steam buns, in the evening they offer a daily ‘braise’.

Chicken & Avocado Sandwich

I had the Chicken & Avocado Sandwich ($8) filled with hot chicken breast and avocado. You will also find a daily soup, and salad offering along with cookies, chocolates and more! They also offer a brunch menu on weekends, you’ll see much more as this space constantly evolves.

Brunch with Riaz Meghji at Au Petit Chavignol

Brunch is a favourite past time shared by many and should be an extraordinary experience, one that you will cherish. Vancouver has some wonderful places for brunch. Each of the places I visit is unique for what is offered along with the type of service and selection of dishes. I am on a journey around the city to find these extraordinary places and, at the same time, I will be joined by a notable personality who may be a Film Producer or Director, Musician, Arts Festival Director, Actor or other well-known individual for Brunch at restaurants in and around Vancouver.

For my twentyfirst brunch in this series, I was joined by TV Host Riaz Meghji at Au Petit Chavignol in Vancouver talking about Television, Life and more!

Riaz Meghji

Growing up in North Delta, Riaz graduated from Simon Fraser University with a degree in Finance. But entertaining an audience has always been his great passion so Riaz quickly made a decision to pursue his career in the entertainment industry. Riaz worked in radio at Z953FM before making the shift into television working for MTV Canada. He joined CTV News as a weathercaster on their evening news and before moving to Ontario to anchor an entertainment show on SUN TV. Eventually, he joined the Citytv family in 2008 as co-host on Breakfast Television in Vancouver.

You have a degree in Finance from  Simon Fraser University, how did you go from Finance in to radio?

Years ago I was at a Burger King in Montreal, there to do a conference just as I was finishing school. Someone what I was doing and suggested that I think of entertainment as a career instead of finance. I thought about it and then started entering contest, one of the contests was for Z95.3 FM where I created a sticker spotter video. MTV Canada was the next one – I ended up getting a screen test to host the show, in the end because of my passion they asked me to become an intern on the show. After taking the Magazine Publishing course at Simon Fraser University,  I then decided to create a 16 page magazine as a stunt and my entry got me the part. Soon after I was working Mon-Fri as an MTV host and weekends as a weather caster on CTV.

What got you working in TV?

The visual medium, presentation aspect. MTV was my first foray into tv, then Sun tv in Toronto followed.

Tell me who some of your most notable guests that you have interviewed for Breakfast Television?

1)    John Gray – talking about love and relationships

2)    Sam Mantica –11 year old who had cancer –I met her at her prom and then she came on the show and it was so powerful.

3)    Going into the Canucks locker-room and talking to Burrows and the guys.

4)    Alex Burrow on the show

5)    Michael Caine on a satellite interview from London

What are some of your craziest experiences you have had on your tv shows?

1)    Being on the Oscars red carpet recently in Los Angeles – it was totally nuts and quite the experience

2)    Olympic Shows we did at Robson Square with Dawn Chubai

3)    In Boston for the Stanley Cup Playoffs – I pitched 3 trolly bus companies to give me a trolly bus for 2 hours in exchange for promoting them on air, 2 turned me down and 1 said yes. We then invite all the Vancouver Canucks fans who were in Boston to come ride the trolley and to cheer the canucks on and we broadcasted this.

Do you come from an entertainment family?

Not at all, my dad is an entrepreneur and my mom was an accountant. My brother Zain is in the entertainment industry now.

Where was your most recent trip?

Oscars in LA covering it for Breakfast Television nationally.

What is your favourite food?

  • Burgers
  • Quinoa

What are your favourite restaurants in Vancouver?

Joe Fortes

Tomato Soup

French Onion Soup

Cheese Burger

Market Fritata

Riaz had a cup of Tomato Soup ($4) and a Cheese Burger ($12) ) Ground AAA beef chuck from Cioffi’s, toasted Kaiser bun, secret sauce, pickle, frites. Richard had the French Onion Soup ($9.50) and the Market Fritata ($12) with seasoned wedge potatoes.

What do you do in your off time?

  • Cross-fit
  • Yoga
  • Writing a book
  • Vancouver ball hockey league
  • Teaming up with charitable organizations

Recently you travelled with your family to East Africa, do you have any highlights of that trip that you would like to share with our readers?

1)    I called Craig Kilber (Free the Children) – he opened up a camp just for my family and I to see how people lived there (the nabogani cottages).

2)    On the final night –they prepared a traditional feast for us with a song and dance in Swahili.

3)    I fed a giraffe a seed from my mouth that was an experience.

Do you read off a script when on Breakfast Television?

No I use notes to form questions and I just go with it, the art of free style.

Who inspires you?

Kevin Macdonald (my life coach)

What’s next for you or what’s on the horizon?

The 3:45am wake-up call

The book

Patio Shines at Reflections

Last night I was invited to the re-opening of one of the nicest and secluded patios in the city, Reflections in the Rosewood Hotel Georgia. Reflections is an elegant alfresco rooftop bar and lounge, located on the hotel’s fourth floor and surrounded by the storied walls of the 85 year-old historic building. With locally-sourced menu ingredients, classically-inspired cocktails, sleek teak furniture and a striking peek-through of the Vancouver skyline.

Scallop Ceviche

Striped Shrimp Terrine

Smoked Sablefish & Salmon Croquetas

Guests mingled over Champagne cocktails, wine and beer while eating some delicious canapés, I loved the Short Rib Beef Mini’s, Striped Shrimp Terrine, Smoked Sablefish & Salmon Croquetas and Scallop Ceviche.

On one side, six exclusive cabanas face a roaring stone fire pit, complete with plush cushions and warming heaters for cooler nights; on the other, oversized teak couches and polished tables are flanked by a gleaming chrome cocktail bar and grill, home to an exceptional team of bartenders and talented cooks.

Reflections is open daily from noon til late. For reservations please telephone 604.673.7043 and for menus and more information visit www.rosewoodhotelgeorgia.com
