Teacher Tong takes his Students on a Food Tour

Joe Tong (left) & James Coleridge (r) at Bella Gelateria

I was invited to join a group of Fraser Heights Secondary School Grade 11 students as they explored some of downtown Vancouver’s Food Trucks on an educational eating tour in late October. Joe Tong who teaches the Food Art class at the school had been following me on twitter for quite some-time and contacted me about an idea he had to take his students on a food truck tour. Without any hesitation I offered up some assistance and brought James Coleridge on board to spend some time with the students educating them on gelato and how he makes his winning gelato at Bella Gelateria.

James Coleridge talking to the students

James spent about an hour telling the students all about gelato and then provided them with a tour in his gelato lab “the kitchen” where they could taste his salted caramel and pumpkin puree. He then gave everyone a scoop of gelato to start off their tasting tour in Vancouver.

Visiting Vij’s Railway

What’s on the menu at Vij’s Railway?

Mushroom Curry and rice

Joe had set-up a tour visiting 3 food trucks all within blocks of each other, the 1st stop was to Vij’s Railway Express to try Chef Vikram Vij’s curries, the students had a choice between a spicy beef or the vegetarian mushroom curry. For most of the students this was their first visit to this food truck and for some the first time eating Indian street food.

Smoked Salmon Sandwich and Poutine

Students eating at The Kaboom Box

The 2nd stop was to The Kaboom Box Food Truck on Granville where we all enjoyed a Smoked Salmon Sandwich and poutine, additionally had the opportunity to meet Andrew Fielding owner of the food truck.

Chef Jimmy Stewart (left) at Roaming Dragon

Chinese Fried Rice Balls

The 3rd and last stop was to Roaming Dragon Food Truck for their Chinese Fried Rice Balls and to meet Chef Jimmy Stewart (he had competed on Top Chef Canada this past season) and ask him questions about their menu.

I enjoyed taking part in this food tour, chatting with the students about their foods class and had the opportunity to see the community that their teacher Joe Tong had created. This is the 1st year this Food Art Class has been offered to the students at Fraser Heights Secondary School in Surrey and it’s the only one of its kind that I know of in the lower mainland.

If you would like to learn more about this food arts class and see the delicious food they make in class, follow their teacher Joe Tong on Twitter @teachertong and on Instagram

Experiencing the Richmond Night Market

On Saturday night my friend Nikki Caine and I visited this market for the first time, I know this may come as a surprise to you, how is it possible that I haven’t been before, well it’s true. I first thought we would check it out, spend an hour and or so, we quickly discovered that this was going to be a night long experience, we then spent 4 hours eating our way around the market.

Pazza Rella Pizza

Margerita Pizza – Pazza Rella Pizza

Salami Pizza – Pazza Rella Pizza

Our 1st stop was to Pazza Rella Pizza and believe me this was a good idea, Neapolitan style pizza made in a wood burning oven that is on a food truck, very cool and a great experience. Nikki and I shared two pizzas, the Margerita (fior di latte cheese, tomato sauce, basil) and the Salami (salami, cheese, tomato sauce), you can find these two wonderful women pizza makers and their truck at this market every weekend through October or follow them on twitter @PazzaRellaPizza

Roti Canai

Making the Roti at Roti Canai

Chocolate Roti at Roti Canai

Our 2nd stop after running into my friend Russel Co (he is an experienced Richmond Night Market visitor who happily gave us some helpful eating tips and the best BBQ spot, more on that later in the post) was at Roti Canai and we ordered the Chocolate Roti. My friend hadn’t tried Roti before which I couldn’t believe, so we ordered it and since I hadn’t had chocolate in Roti before I thought heck let’s try it and so glad that we did, this was delicious!

Tip: Since it’s always crowded and there are line-ups almost everywhere, throw out the notion of eating savouries then dessert and mix it up.

Georgio’s Pinoy BBQ

Georgio’s Pinoy BBQ

Our 3rd stop was to Georgio’s Pinoy BBQ  (this was Russel’s pick, he said it was the best BBQ at the market) we waited and we watched them barbq the meat, then it was time to indulge in BBQ Pork on a skewer and it was flavourful.

As we walked up and down the aisles of food stalls, some we looked at such as the Deep Fried Dessert Bus (we couldn’t eat here,  it wasn’t a food of choice for us, however the line-up was deep) people were lining up for deep fried mars and snickers bars, even deep fried cheese cake.  We continued walking.

Japanese Rice Burger & Fries

Japanese Yam Fries with honey garlic sauce

Our 4th stop was at Japanese Rice Burger & Fries and here we ordered the Japanese Yam Fries with honey garlic sauce and this was yum, again we were sharing and this was a good dish to share.

making Dragon Beard Candy

We were so curious after hearing about Dragon Beard Candy, having no idea as to what that was, we visited their stand to watch and talk, discovering that it is a Chinese version of Cotton Candy, we will indulge in this treat next time.

Mango Yummy

Mangos, Vanilla Ice Cream & Shaved Ice at Mango Yummy

Our 5th stop was at Mango Yummy (this was the favourite pick of the women who work at Pazza Rella Pizza and we took their suggestion), it all looked good, we settled on the Mangos & Ice Cream with shaved ice and again sharing was the right thing to do, this was delicious and was one of my favourite dishes of the night.

More walking around we saw a stand that jumped out at a me more in awe, I had no idea what Itofu was selling, so I had a closer look, I was curious as to what Tofu with Black Sugar was, they saw me being very curious and then offered me a taste which I happily had and decided to try that dish another time.

Walked by Le Tigre Cuisine, I knew that these guys also have a food truck located downtown during the week, since they had quite the line-up I decided I will wait and visit their food truck one day soon.

Rotato

Making Rotato

Seasoning our Rotato

Caramel Rotato

Our 6th stop was at Rotato, obviously this is one of the most popular stands at the market, this one seemed to have the longest line-up all night long, so we decided why wait an hour earlier in the night and we made it our last stop of the night at 10:30 pm and waited about 10 minutes. We shared the Caramel Rotato, now if you haven’t been to this market you may be wondering what a Rotato is, besides the cool name, it is actually a potato that was sliced up in some sort of twisted machine, then skewered on a stick and deep fried. Then after you choose your flavour (they have savoury and sweet flavours) they sprinkle it all over and voila you are served your Rotato –this was really good, worth the 10 minute wait, not sure if it is worth an hour wait but you can be the judge.

Tip: You need good walking shoes, wear dark clothes (if you wear white any food that lands on you will show), and take a long a sweater or light jacket.

Tip: Don’t drive to this market, take Canada Line like we did, it’s quick and so easy.

Tip: There is a long line-up to get in and it moves quite fast.

Tip: It is cash only for entrance as well as at most of the vendors.

Cost: $1.50 per person to enter

Hours: 7pm – 12:30am

Open: Weekends at night only thru the summer until October

Location: 8351 River Road, Richmond and here is a map on how to find it.

We also walked around all of the non-food stalls and saw all sorts of neat items, the item that stood out the most was the cases for iphones, this is one popular item which can be found at the 10+ stalls throughout the market. On the food side there were 88 Food stalls and on the other side at least 200 stalls, so expect to do lots of walking and most of all lots of eating at this market.

Exploring Main Street Station Market

I recently visited this market for the first time, as a huge supporter of the Farmers Markets in Vancouver I have visited the Kitsilano and Kerrisdale markets in the past.

Showing off their Micro-Greens

Jane’s Honey Bees

Livan Chocolates

Rootables Chips

From sweet peppers to micro greens, from honey to cheese, from chocolate to sprouts, from baked goods to food trucks this market has it all and more!

Shopping for fresh, local vegetables and fruits at the Farmers markets has always been the best way to support your community. Vancouver is blessed to have a great organization called eatlocal.org that is the umbrella organization for Vancouver Farmers Markets. If you would like to learn more about Vancouver Farmers Markets, watch this film featuring Roberta LaQuaglia  who is the Operations Manager, she spoke at one of our Food Talks events this past June.

The Main Street Station Market is located on the 1100 Block Station Street along Thornton Park across from the VIA Rail Station and near the Main St Skytrain Station and takes place each Wednesday afternoon from 3pm-7pm thru October 6th.

A Culinary Tour of Chinatown

Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden

Partaking in this tour of Chinatown with Robert Sung should have never taken me so long, having known Robert for the past couple of years, it took about that much time to finally join one of his tours. I discovered many new places in the city that I have lived in all my life, learned a few things and was thoroughly entertained by Robert Sung who lead this tour!

Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden

The tour began at the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden in the heart of Chinatown which was incorporated in 1981, is a self-sustaining, not-for-profit organization with the mandate to maintain and enhance the bridge of understanding between Chinese and Western cultures, promote Chinese culture generally and be an integral part of the local community.

From there we walked through Chinatown towards The Chinese Tea Shop, I was already intrigued as this was the 2nd spot I hadn’t previously visited. Personally I was happy to be visiting as part of a tour, as I was able to benefit from Robert organizing the tea tasting ceremony for all of us.

traditional Chinese Tea Ceremony (Gong-Fu Cha)

Here we were treated to a traditional Chinese Tea Ceremony (Gong-Fu Cha) lead by the owners who served us mini-tea cups and did a 5 wave tea pour to show us the different tastes of the tea leaves. We had a chance to tour the shop looking at all of their teas and wares.

Robert Sung serving us the Apple Tarts

Back through Chinatown walking through the streets on to our next stop, the famous New Town Bakery for their popular Apple Tarts (they sell over 1000 of these tarts daily). Here we had an opportunity to eat one of these yummy tarts which was the perfect snack.

Robert Sung with a handful of Goji Berries

From here we walked up the street into one of their specialty markets where we had an opportunity to try some of the Japanese Plums and Goji Berries.

Taoist Temple

Next stop was to the Taoist Temple where we climbed the stairs to the sacred place and learned about their collection of artifacts.

Then it was off to the butcher shop, followed by the seafood market where we were able to see the live tanks that were filled with crab and fish.

Jade Dynasty Restaurant

Finally we were off to have Dim Sum at Jade Dynasty (this stop was an extra cost for the lunch). Sitting around a large table, we were served hot tea. Then dish after dish arrived to the table for us all to eat and enjoy!

Robert Sung giving a couple of the ladies a lesson in holding chopsticks

Shrimp Dumplings and Gai Lan

Chinese Noodles

Pan Fried Dumplings

Sesame Balls

I loved the Gai Lan, Shrimp Dumplings, Chinese Noodles, Pan Fried Dumplings as well as the Sesame Balls for dessert. This was the only place that I had been to previously along with New Town Bakery, all of the other places that we visited on this informative cultural and culinary tour were all knew to me. This is exactly what a tour is supposed to do, highlight historical places and educate the patrons who take the tour.

I highly recommend taking this tour A Walk Around Chinatown with Robert Sung, you can find out all the details of his tours along with prices online here http://www.awokaround.com/

Touring Guilty Pleasure Locales in Vancouver

The first business I ever had was a tour company, while in college a friend and I started a tour company to take kids to unique spots around the city. That lead me into other business ventures over the years, though the art of touring has always been of interest to me. I was recently invited to take part in the “Guilty Pleasures Gourmet Tour” offered by Michelle Ng of Vancouver Foodie Tours. I had no idea what to expect initially, however, I soon discovered how organized Michelle was and this was going to be an enjoyable experience and it was.

Steamed Prawn and Pork Dumplings

The “Guilty Pleasures Gourmet Tour” is walking tour around a fairly close area with like-minded foodies. I recently spent my Saturday afternoon with a group of wonderful people that included tourists from San Francisco, along with locals from Port Moody, Richmond and Vancouver. We started off at Kirin Restaurant on Alberni Street, this was my first visit to this location so it was a treat even for me. Sitting at one of their large round tables, Michelle gave us all an intro into Dim Sum dining, then the Manager also talked about the restaurant which was quite interesting. At this restaurant we sipped on Jasmine Tea while tasting Steamed Prawn and Pork Dumplings along with Sticky Rice with Pork and Dried Scallop wrapped in Lotus Leaf.

Sutton Place Wine Merchant

Our next stop was to the Sutton Place Wine Merchant to taste the BC produced Domaine de Chaberton Bacchus wine along with some crackers and preserves, I think having this location as a stop on a tour is a great idea if you love wine, however if you don’t love wine then you may want to take in all the action of the Japadog cart in front.

Ensemble Tap, Manager – Christopher Cho

BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich

On to stop #3, a visit to Top Chef Canada’s Chef Dale Mackay’s Ensemble Tap Restaurant to taste their BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich paired with a glass of Red Truck Ale. I have eaten at this restaurant a few times previously, however this was my first time having this delicious BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich. During the visit, Ensemble Tap, Manager – Christopher Cho gave us a very thorough background of the company and restaurant along with a tour of the kitchen.

Spicy Wild Salmon Tartar

Artisan Sake Maker’s Osake Junmai Nama

The next stop was to visit Shuraku Sake Bar & Bistro, a Japanese Izakaya with a large selection of Sake. Here we tasted the Spicy Wild Salmon Tartar and Agedashi Tofu paired with local Artisan Sake Maker’s Osake Junmai Nama.

The final stop was to visit Bella Gelateria my favourite gelateria in the city, well its my favourite gelateria in North America, so I was quite happy for a return visit. Here we tasted the Salted Pecan Gelato, Salted Caramel Gelato and Meyer Lemon Sorbetto. At this point I reflected on some new dishes I had tasted and the touring experience which even in my own city was a wonderful experience.

I would highly recommend this tour or any tour that Michelle Ng offers as she is well versed in creating an educational and tasty experience around Vancouver.
