Juicing it Up with The Juice Box

The Juice Box company is the most recent newcomer to the Juice scene in Vancouver, they don’t have a truck or a storefront, instead they produce their juice in a local commissary and deliver to customers all over the city as well sell their juices through a growing list of Yoga studios who embody similar philosophies as the owners.

I had the opportunity to try a selection of their juices, first of all I loved the packaging, each of the juices comes in a nifty glass bottle, secondly the juices are all 100% organic cold-pressed raw juices which they say lasts 4-5 days. My favourite juices out of the four that I tried were the Orange Cucumber and the Carrot Orange Ginger.

The Juice Box juices are available to order and can be delivered to your doorstep daily, you can follow them on twitter @thejuicebox

Kind Bars the Perfect Snack

There are snacks that are good for you and snacking on foods that are not so good for you. Recently KIND sent me some of their snack bars to try, I sampled my way through a couple of boxes of 3 varieties, snacking either in the office or after a yoga class. These are the good for you kind of snack bars and I am rather taken by the Peanut Butter Dark Chocolate + Protein followed by the Almond Coconut and lastly Cranberry Almond + vitamins A, C, E. All of the bars that I sampled tasted great and that is a big plus for a snack or protein bar, secondly they are low in sodium and for the most part are cholesterol free. If you had a wheat allergy then you would appreciate that they are gluten and wheat free as well.

KIND Snack bars and plus bars are available all over North America, locally you can find them at Whole Foods as well as many other grocers in the greater Vancouver area, you can follow them on twitter @KINDSnacks

Refreshing Be Coconut Water

Refreshing drinks are always the way to go for hydration after exercise. Awhile back Be Coconut sent me a case of their coconut water to try, knowing that a bottle or two would just give me a taste I expect they wanted to challenge me somewhat. Over a period of a couple months I drank my way through the coconut water which was quite refreshing.

I am not a fan of sugary sport drinks, so this brand of coconut water worked well for my beverage preference, I had only tasted the pure version for this article.

Pure, natural and hydrating Be Coconut Water is currently sourced from a single estate farm in Southern Thailand. They use the purest super fruit ingredients Mother Nature has to offer capturing naturally occurring vitamins, minerals and antioxidants to support active lifestyles and healthy living.

Be Coconut Water is available locally in a variety of stores including Urban Fare. You can follow them on Twitter @becoconut and ask them where this brand is available in your neighborhood.

Places for Pie

There is Pie and then there is Pie, these are some of the notable pie purveyors that I visited over the past couple of months.  This article is all about who bakes PIE in and around Vancouver.

My visit to Aphrodite’s Organic Café and Pie Shop in Vancouver.

making a Raspberry Rhubarb Pie

History:

In 2002, founder Allan Christian found himself working with and living on Glen Valley Organic Farm Co-Op in the Fraser Valley using his sales and marketing skills to help raise money to keep the farm operational.  He grew up on a traditional farm in Saskatchewan and even though he had left that behind many years ago,

Allan was always adventurous in the kitchen and during a visit from his mother they baked pies together with the organic heritage apples that had fallen from the trees in the orchard. He had a vision that an organic pie shop in the city would be a great way to bring the wholesomeness of the farm to the folks in the city, and with lots of determination, hard work and sweat equity, he opened the original pie shop in April 2003.

Later in that same year he opened the cafe to find a venue for the wonderful fresh organic vegetables from the farm and would often harvest the vegetables and serve them the same day in the restaurant!

Allan Christian’s daughter, Peggy took over the restaurant and pie shop shortly after Allan’s passing in 2008 and has committed to keep her father’s legacy alive and thriving.
