Slow Food Story at Doxa Fest May 5

Slow Food Story is being presented by the DOXA Documentary Film Festival on Sunday May 5th at 3:45pm at The Cinematheque

In 1986, Carlo Petrini founded the ArciGola Gastronomic Association in Italy and three years later in Paris, launched Slow Food, an international anti-fast-food resistance movement. An ebullient presence, Carlìn, as he is affectionately known around the globe, has become an ambassador for thinking about food differently. From the tiny town of Bra, home to some 27,000 inhabitants, the Slow Food movement has grown to become a revolution, that now has roots in more than 150 countries. Cheese-makers, vintners, and artisanal food folk, toast Slow Food for bringing about a change in consciousness that shook the very foundation of gastronomy. Director Stefano Sardo brings a decidedly down home approach, as he follows Carlo and his close-knit group of friends, from their earliest days as political radicals, to later struggles with unexpected tragedy. A joyous romp of a film, filled with all manner of delectable scenes of food, drink and song, Slow Food amply demonstrates that adventure is best served in heaping helpings.

Teacher Tong takes his Students on a Food Tour

Joe Tong (left) & James Coleridge (r) at Bella Gelateria

I was invited to join a group of Fraser Heights Secondary School Grade 11 students as they explored some of downtown Vancouver’s Food Trucks on an educational eating tour in late October. Joe Tong who teaches the Food Art class at the school had been following me on twitter for quite some-time and contacted me about an idea he had to take his students on a food truck tour. Without any hesitation I offered up some assistance and brought James Coleridge on board to spend some time with the students educating them on gelato and how he makes his winning gelato at Bella Gelateria.

James Coleridge talking to the students

James spent about an hour telling the students all about gelato and then provided them with a tour in his gelato lab “the kitchen” where they could taste his salted caramel and pumpkin puree. He then gave everyone a scoop of gelato to start off their tasting tour in Vancouver.

Visiting Vij’s Railway

What’s on the menu at Vij’s Railway?

Mushroom Curry and rice

Joe had set-up a tour visiting 3 food trucks all within blocks of each other, the 1st stop was to Vij’s Railway Express to try Chef Vikram Vij’s curries, the students had a choice between a spicy beef or the vegetarian mushroom curry. For most of the students this was their first visit to this food truck and for some the first time eating Indian street food.

Teacher Tong at the Kaboom Box

Smoked Salmon Sandwich and Poutine

Students eating at The Kaboom Box

The 2nd stop was to The Kaboom Box Food Truck on Granville where we all enjoyed a Smoked Salmon Sandwich and poutine, additionally had the opportunity to meet Andrew Fielding owner of the food truck.

Chef Jimmy Stewart (left) at Roaming Dragon

Chinese Fried Rice Balls

The 3rd and last stop was to Roaming Dragon Food Truck for their Chinese Fried Rice Balls and to meet Chef Jimmy Stewart (he had competed on Top Chef Canada this past season) and ask him questions about their menu.

I enjoyed taking part in this food tour, chatting with the students about their foods class and had the opportunity to see the community that their teacher Joe Tong had created. This is the 1st year this Food Art Class has been offered to the students at Fraser Heights Secondary School in Surrey and it’s the only one of its kind that I know of in the lower mainland.

If you would like to learn more about this food arts class and see the delicious food they make in class, follow their teacher Joe Tong on Twitter @teachertong and on Instagram

Cry not, lovers of cutting-edge gastronomy! Though chef Ferran Adrià’s foodie mecca El Bulli in Catalonia, Spain, closed for good this past July, its work as an ingenious generator of avant-garde cuisine lives on in Gereon Wetzel’s immaculately crafted documentary. Like Adrià’s food, the film engages not just the five senses, but the emotions as well.

The C Blue Film Festival May 19

Water quenches our thirst. It cleanses our bodies. It cooks our food. It baptizes our young. We spend the first nine months of our existence in water. Our ashes are spread over water; some are buried at sea. We’re up to 78% water.

Water creates. It gives life. It makes things grow. In Japan, water destroyed, it swept away thousands. Water killed.

Water gives, and water takes; it is a part of our existence. Water makes dew and snowflakes. Water deserves, and demands, our respect.

On Thursday, May 19th, the C Blue Film Festival unspools at Vancity Theatre in Vancouver, screening the short-listed entries to the The C Blue Film Competition. The subject of the movies is water. If you could help us get the word out about our “little festival that could”, we would be very grateful.

The competition and festival evening is a grassroots initiative by the C Blue Foundation, our new organization dedicated to all water: lakes, rivers, streams, oceans and glaciers. The blue movement begins.  General admission is $8. Buy Tickets here.

Join us after the screening for a luxe cocktail and canape party orchestrated by C Restaurant. Chefs Robert Clark and Lee Humphries will serve sophisticated bites that are built with ingredients that are fished, farmed and foraged close to home. Chef Clark and proprietor Harry Kambolis were recently awarded SeaWeb’s Seafood Champion award for their work promoting sustainable seafood. C has an unshakeable commitment to oceans advocacy, and a direct relationship with the fishermen who catch the fish. This is ethical luxury. Tickets are $32. Buy Tickets here.
