Exploring Trout Lake Farmers Market

A couple weekends ago I visited this market for the first time, as a huge supporter of the Farmers Markets in Vancouver, this was one market that I hadn’t had the opportunity to visit.

This is one of the larger of the neighborhood markets centrally located in East Van, where you will find a wide assortment of farmers some of which are there every week and others who there on select weekends through out the season.

Tasting at the Vancouver Christmas Market

Last night I visited the Vancouver Christmas Market for the very first time, centrally located on the Plaza at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, all that was needed was snow and Christmas music to get you in the festive mood!

This indeed was an outdoor Christmas village with row upon row of illuminated wooden huts offering handmade gifts and tempting treats. There were thousands of Christmas lights sparkling along with a popular Carousel.

I began my adventure with a mug of hot Apple Cider ($4) as I then roamed around the village.

Next was a visit to Farmhouse Cheeses where I saw Debra Amrein-Boyes and talked about her wonderful cheeses, which lead me to indulge in their Raclette ($8) served with melted Alpine Gold Cheese and Helmers potatoes.

Lastly I enjoyed a delicious cup of Potato Soup with bun for dipping at the Soupmeister.

The market is open daily until December 24, 2012. Make sure you check out the information and how to get tickets here and enjoy the holiday festivities.

An Afternoon with Chef David Adjey

Last Friday I had the pleasure of spending the afternoon with Chef David Adjey, we started off on a tour of the Granville Island Public Market where David was on a mission to find ingredients to cook a recipe that night at the Vancouver Home + Interior Design Show. We were joined by a few women including Carole MacFarlane who won the market tour contest that was sponsored by VHDS. Shopping for ingredients with David was quite the treat for these women as well as for the vendors in the market as he picked up fresh tuna, manila clams, olives, Spanish olive oil and lots of local vegetables for his dish that he aptly named “Tuna: Cool, Warm and Hot”.

Chef David Adjey has established a strong television presence as a chef-expert for the Food Network on such programs as “Restaurant Makeover”, and is now staring in his own new show for Food, entitled “The Opener”. David who lives in Toronto, has been Personal Chef to actor Dan Aykroyd, appeared on the Jay Leno Show, and realized a dream as Chef Proprietor of his own Toronto fine dining establishment, “Nectar”.

Chef David Adjey at the Sandbar

After our market tour we dined nearby at The Sandbar on the patio overlooking False Creek and downtown. We all had a great time talking with David over wine and tasty creations prepared by Executive Chef William Tse. William served us a delicious array of BC sockeye salmon Gyoza, Seared Scallops, Ahi tuna with jam of pineapple and blackberries, Soy brined sablefish, Crabcakes and ginger fried oysters.
