Going Crazy for Pie

Pie is all the rage in Vancouver, one of the latest food trends to tempt us all, it’s not just about the good old fashioned pie, this pie trend includes sweet and savoury, from pies to tarts. There are many places around the city specializing in these flaky wonders, here are a few that I have tried lately of which are on my radar for having some of the city’s best.

Chocolate Pecan Pie

This is the very best Chocolate Pecan Pie I have ever had and I have tried a lot of pies over the years. From the first bite I took it was heaven on the fork from the delicious flakey crust to the moist and delish filling, I knew that I hit bliss. I joked with my friend that this was the smallest pie shop I had ever seen and I was quite serious.  They offer up about 5 pies at any given time, there is no room for much more, the shop seats 2 people, so take out is pretty much the only option. Two sisters are the owners Andrea and Stephanie French and the pies are baked fresh daily, sold whole or by the slice.

The shop features everything tarts, from savoury to sweet their selection is vast. Two sisters are the owners Lisa and Shawna Coan and the tarts are baked fresh daily, and sold whole.

Banana Cream Pie

The Banana Cream Pie topped with To Die For Banana Bread streusel topping was over the top goodness and this was one pie that I could not eat alone, as good as it was, it was also extremely rich and indulgent. They offer an extensive selection of savoury and sweet pies. All are available to order with a minimum of 24 hours notice, you can then pickup the pie or have it delivered to you. Cartems Donuts and the Story

Earl Grey Donut

The other day I heard about a new donut shop that popped up at the corner of Carrall and Hastings. I was curious, and I had to check it out.  Within an hour of them opening just as I got in the door they were sold out. Curious then became furious, how could they sell out of 100 donuts so fast. Cartems Donuterie is owned by 3 partners,  Jordan Cash the guy who dreamt up the concept, along with his partners Mark Tagulao and Rajesh Narine, they opened up last week renting space in Sean Heather’s Penn Bake Shop for a 6 month pop-up donut shop. This is really a social media driven donut shop, even though they have specific hours listed on their facebook page, you have to follow them on twitter @Cartemsdonuts to be kept in the loop on if and when they are going to be open, the donut flavours on hand or that they are all gone. I see a trend @pizzeriafarina does this all so well, when they are running low on dough for the pizzas they tweet it out and within minutes they are sold out, they inform their customers on twitter, first pizza now donuts, what’s going to be next in this social media food game!

Triple Chocolate Donut

The Flavours

I tried the Earl Grey and the Triple Chocolate, I wanted to try the Maple Bourbon Bacon but there were none by the time I got there. They also make up to 40 different flavours for now including sweet snow, gluten free, cinnamon sugar, carrot cake, and sweet heat.

Sourcing Locally

Their ingredients are sourced from as close to Vancouver as possible, the flour comes from Anita’s Organic Mill (Chilliwack), their eggs are from Rabbit River Farms (Richmond), butter comes from Golden Ears Farms (Maple Ridge), the milk is from Avalon Dairy (Burnaby), and their spices come from Gathering Place Trading Company on Cortes Island.

Local ingredients – ethically sourced and sustainable – mean a higher quality donut, could this be the driving force behind this already booming donut company.

Making the Donuts

Now this is where things get really interesting, how do you fry donuts in a pop-up shop that’s located in a bake shop without a fryer. Enter the Woodland Smokehouse & Commissary another newly opened business located at 485 Commercial Drive which is owned by Tyson Reimer and Ryan Murfitt of Gastown’s Peckinpah. Tyson and Ryan opened the Woodland Smokehouse as they ran out of space to expand their product offerings, they needed to expand their meat smoker. One thing lead to another a new commissary was born, the guys from Cartems needed a place to make and fry up their donuts and voila this is just the beginning!

Places for Pie

There is Pie and then there is Pie, these are some of the notable pie purveyors that I visited over the past couple of months.  This article is all about who bakes PIE in and around Vancouver.

My visit to Aphrodite’s Organic Café and Pie Shop in Vancouver.

making a Raspberry Rhubarb Pie

History:

In 2002, founder Allan Christian found himself working with and living on Glen Valley Organic Farm Co-Op in the Fraser Valley using his sales and marketing skills to help raise money to keep the farm operational.  He grew up on a traditional farm in Saskatchewan and even though he had left that behind many years ago,

Allan was always adventurous in the kitchen and during a visit from his mother they baked pies together with the organic heritage apples that had fallen from the trees in the orchard. He had a vision that an organic pie shop in the city would be a great way to bring the wholesomeness of the farm to the folks in the city, and with lots of determination, hard work and sweat equity, he opened the original pie shop in April 2003.

Later in that same year he opened the cafe to find a venue for the wonderful fresh organic vegetables from the farm and would often harvest the vegetables and serve them the same day in the restaurant!

Allan Christian’s daughter, Peggy took over the restaurant and pie shop shortly after Allan’s passing in 2008 and has committed to keep her father’s legacy alive and thriving.
