Advice: no liquor license (one day soon). Cash only.

I had been very curious, as the name of the restaurant was so different, I was curious to meet Bob as I assumed there would be an interesting story. I ventured in for lunch today to taste some authentic Thai, and it was very tasty, wonderful flavours and wonderful service. Of course after my meal I ended up talking to my server who turned out to be the owner about his food which eventually turned into stories about his childhood and the food he ate while growing up in Northern Thailand. The owner is a Filmmaker and Animator by profession who had a dream to open at Thai restaurant and that dream is now reality. The décor is simple, it is the food you are hear for, try the different dishes, share stories with your friends and Bob.

Pad Pik King Chicken lunch set

I had the spicy and flavourful Pad Pik King Chicken lunch set ($7.50) chicken sauteed with red curry paste, green bean, lime leaf, garlic and chilli with rice and greens. Curiousity struck again and I had to try one of their desserts and went with the Maw_Gang ($2.50) that was made with taro root, coconut, egg, palm sugar, baked Thai style, topped with deep fried shallots, this was so different but so YUM!

Advice: No reservations, prepare to stand in a line-up during peak periods. There are a few different sauces on each table, use their Hoisin sauce with any of the subs. Their French Bread out of the oven is outstanding and usually sells out by the end of the day.

I have dined here on many occasions and have had a few different dishes on the menu, though I tend to order the same dishes on each visit.

Chicken Sub

Dark French Coffee

Most recently I had the #4 Chicken Sub ($3.75) fresh home-made French baguette with shredded chicken, vegetables and hot peppers and the #55 Dark French Coffee ($3.25) Vietnamese coffee (with no cream). The décor is bright pink inside the small restaurant and I am pretty sure it hasn’t changed since opening many years ago. The service has always been very friendly and a cup of hot tea is on the table by the time I have been seated. The other dish that I have had on many occasions is the Curry Chicken served with steamed rice for ($7.25). The menu is filled with noodle and rice dishes as well their French bread sandwiches.

CAFETERIA

Advice: They don’t take reservations, go early or expect to wait in line.

I found myself another go to neighbourhood restaurant in the Soma area, I often miss Monsoon the neighbourhood Asian bistro where I frequently ate, the prices were good and the place had vibe. Cafeteria is that place with good prices and a great vibe and servers with personality, it’s not Asian but it’s a place that is going to be filled with people wanting great food at good prices.

Duo of Chicken

Panoueque Dulche de Leche

Last week I was in for dinner, sat at the bar which is a perfect spot for solo diners and I enjoyed the Duo of Chicken ($18) braised gem lettuce, chanterelles for my main and then Panoueque Dulche de Leche ($7) for dessert. The menu is fairly simple and changes constantly with 5 appies, 5 mains, and 3 desserts along with a nice wine list.

Advice: Free wifi (ask for the code)

This is my new go to cafe, serving great coffee from Herkimer, tea from Barnes & Watson, in an awesome space that is decorated by unique art adorning the walls. You could say that I am in love with this cafe, I do love the communal table in the center of the cafe as well as the black couches near the front and the cool truck lighting hanging near the sliding windows.

Espresso Macchiato

Pumpkin Cream Cheese Icing Sandwich

I have had a few of the items here including a perfectly prepared Espresso Macchiato ($3), a Sumatra Pour Over Coffee ($2.25), a Brownie ($2.25) and the outstandingly delicious and addicting Pumpkin Cream Cheese Icing Sandwich ($3). The menu is pretty simple, espresso beverages, pour over coffee, tea, and baked goods which includes brownies, scones and muffins. I am hooked on the moist, gooey, chocolatey brownies and you will be too!

Shredded Potato

Crispy Fried Pan Cake

Lamb Shanks Noodle Soup

Noodles

For over 13 years this family run business has been hand rolling their noodles that they have become known for. I was lucky to be joined by my friend Stephanie Yuen who is another food writer who knows her Chinese food oh so well. We began our meal with the cold Shredded Potato ($3) with garlic, sesame oil a vegetarian dish with a sour and salty taste. Next up was the tasty Crispy Fried Pan Cake ($3.50) with fresh green onion, sprinkled with sesame. We then ventured into the first of a couple of the noodle dishes that they are known for. First was the Lamb Shanks Noodle Soup ($8) sprinkled with garlic and cilantro; and the other dish was the Noodles ($7) Perfumed with lemon garlic, green onion sauce, red chili crunch, topped with spinach and beansprouts (spicy & hot). With a pot of their house tea we enjoyed all of the dishes and conversation.

The style of food cooked here is from Lanzo in the Ghanxu province in China, very different style of food than other Chinese restaurants.

Advice: No reservations, sit anywhere you wish and have a taste of their chai.

Wild Salmon Rice Bowl

Nutty Gypsy

I’ve been coming here ever since they opened this eastside location where I love the ambience and the food. The dining room if you could call it that isn’t anything like you have seen around the city, I can’t really call it cozy but it is very unique. The wooden seats are covered with afghan rugs and the tables are made of wooden logs and the incense burns from afar. Most nights there is live music with musicians on the sitar and other eastern instruments which adds to the pleasure of dining here. I have had most of the Eastern Roti Rolls on the menu, on my most recent visit I had the delicious Wild Salmon Rice Bowl ($8.50) baked miso salmon in coconut milk, lime leaves and red/green thai curry. Also for my beverage I had one of their amazing milkshakes, the Nutty Gypsy ($4.50) made with soy milk and frozen yogurt, mixed nuts, cardamom, cinnamon, and chocolate. I am also a fan of their Turkish Chill and Himalyan High milkshakes.

Advice: Sit anywhere you feel like sitting.

Wholewheat French toast

Pan Fried Potatoes

This is one of those long time places that has become an institution in the city, since 1948, Bert’s has been serving breakfasts to loyal customers who know good food and value. Their large collection of bobbleheads and of famous people too sits above the front counter drawing customers with their cameras in hand. Love the counter for solo dining, lots of seating throughout the restaurant. I was there for breakfast and had 2 slices of Wholewheat French toast ($5.50) along with a side of Pan Fried Potatoes ($3.25). One of my friends eats there regularly 2-3 times a week for breakfast, he always orders something different to make his visit memorable. This restaurant has been serving customers for over the past 60 years because the service is ever so friendly and people can drop in and sit anywhere they would like. Asides from the extensive selection on the breakfast menu they also serve a wide variety of items on their lunch and dinner menus including hot and cold sandwiches, salads, gourmet burgers, pastas, chicken, greek dishes, steaks and seafood. Make sure you leave some room for dessert or one of their popular milkshakes after your lunch or dinner.

GRUB

Advice: Bring a mini-flashlight to view the menu.

1/2 Rack of Lamb

1/2 Rack of Lamb

I finally made a visit to Grub a place that is fairly close to me in the neighborhood that I have yearned to visit. The menu features a wide range of choices that include salads and pizzas and the menu board features a variety of fish and meat specials that change frequently along with some vegetarian and vegan options, I went the meat route special and had the 1/2 Rack of Lamb ($19) provencal, housemade gnocchi in herbed goat cheese cream with smoked pepper coulis.

Vegan Chocolate Espresso Cake

For dessert I had the special Vegan Chocolate Espresso Cake ($8) with blood orange coulis, and vanilla ice cream. The bar menu features a pretty good selection of wines along with some local beers and cocktails. The décor is nostalgic somewhat Ikea like, with hearty comfort food and wonderful flavours that make your tastebuds go wild. Next time I am coming for brunch.
