Advice: Located across from the Public Market on Granville Island.

I love art and more so love art on a plate, visiting for lunch recently I indulged in both. Having had dishes created by Chef Jennifer Dodd and Tom Lee at off-site events it was a must that I dine in their restaurant.

Chicken Taco

Smoked Alberta Bison Shortribs & Frites

Since I was dining solo, I had to choose wisely, to begin I had a delicious Chicken Taco that was served open face on a crispy flat taco, topped with chicken, fresh herbs and edible flowers. I then had the outstanding Smoked Alberta Bison Shortribs & Frites ($16) with red apple, spiced pecan salad and fresh horseradish. Not only was the dish flavourful it was also colorful on the plate with an artfulness character at play and I loved the crispy fries that were cooked in duck fat.

Triple Chocolate Brownie Mousse Cake

For dessert which was the perfect finish to my meal, I had the delicious Triple Chocolate Brownie Mousse Cake ($8) with caramel, grapes and nuts.

There is an open kitchen, great bar set-up, a pantry to buy all sorts of edible goodies, along with a large amount of seating both inside and out. They also have a private space within the restaurant where they offer their market dinners when featuring visiting chefs. Already looking forward to a return visit to try some more inventive dishes!

Rice Bowl with Butter Chicken

Located inside the Granville Island Public Market is a fairly small kiosk serving up tasty Indian dishes, I’ve eaten here several times in the past, most recently I had the Rice Bowl ($8) with Butter Chicken and Naan. There are all sorts of curries on offer from chicken to vegetables, along with basmati rice, samosas, naan and more with many specials daily. Great place to visit when you are shopping at the market, follow them on twitter for their daily specials and musings!

THE SANDBAR

Advice: Sushi bar is on the main level, dining rooms are located on the 2nd and 3rd levels.

Fish Tacos

On Granville Island, with an entrance that is a bit hidden, you’ll find a seafood emporium that is bustling with locals and tourists alike. A friend joined me for dinner and we shared the Fish Tacos ($11) as an appetizer, filled with red snapper, salsa fresca, chipotle, white corn tortilla.

Warm Beet Salad

Sandbar Big Salad

Moving on we each had a salad, I had the Warm Beet Salad ($13) with champagne vinaigrette, walnuts and goat cheese; my friend had the Sandbar Big Salad ($14) with mixed greens, tomatoes, beets, cucumbers, kalamata olives, edameme, sliced egg, French sherry vinaigrette.

Cedar Plank Salmon

Alderwood Smoked Halibut

Since the restaurant is known for its fish and seafood, we both decided to have fish for our entrees; I had the Cedar Plank Salmon ($24) in a brown sugar, soy marinade with rice and seasonal vegetables. My friend had the special, which was underwhelming , Alderwood Smoked Halibut ($28) served with rice and vegetables.

Belgian Chocolate Pudding

Our table neighbours were visiting from the east coast and told us that we must try the Chocolate Pudding dessert, so we ordered two, one for each of us, sadly we should have only had one to share, the ever so rich Belgian Chocolate Pudding ($8) with toffee cream and pistachio praline. They have a good wine list that is worth having a look.

DOCKSIDE RESTAURANT

1253 Johnston Street, Vancouver

Advice: Make a reservation thru Open Table. If someone in your party is celebrating a birthday tell the Manager not the server.

Grilled Wild Sockey Salmon

Oven Roasted Alaska Black Cod

Roasted Wild Pacific Halibut

My family and I had dinner recently and were delighted with the great menu of seafood as well as many other selections  Large and spacious Dockside has one of the best views in the city, situated on Granville Island overlooking False Creek, the marina and the downtown core. After looking at the menu we decided to skip the appetizers. For our Entrees we enjoyed the Grilled Wild Sockey Salmon ($26) with four citrus vinaigrette; Roasted Wild Pacific Halibut ($28) with herb crust, dill beurre blank and Oven Roasted Alaska Black Cod ($28) with katchumber salad and raita.

Almond Pear Tart

Deconstructed Tiramisu

Pistachio Cardemom Gelato

For Dessert, we enjoyed the Almond Pear Tart ($9) with green tea ice cream; Deconstructed Tiramisu ($9) coffee chocolate cake with brandy marscarpone cream and the Pistachio Cardemom Gelato ($9) with poached apricot.

The restaurant missed the mark on the service aspect, I reserved thru open table in advance telling them that one person in our party was celebrating a birthday. When we sat down we made a reference to the birthday and the server never even acknowledged it neither did anyone refer to what was indicated in the Open Table reservation. I was surprised as to how good the food was in relation to the poor service.

Advice: Get their between 10:30-11:30 am to get your choice of sandwich before they are all gone.

LaBageute La Baguete3

I have been coming to this bakery to pick up my bread for years, the bakery has been on Granville Island opposite the market for so many years. As you enter the smell of freshly baked bread fills the air, they often have samples of their breads and pastries for tasting. My favourite of the breads is the Multigrain ($4.25), other delicious items here are the Almond Chocolate Crossants ($3.50) filled with almond cream, chocolate and roasted sliced almonds and the Almond Bear Claw Danish ($3.50) a light Danish pastry filled with almond custard topped with powdered sugar. They feature a daily selection of freshly made sandwiches, my favourite is the Vegetarian ($6.95) and they specialize in French pastries and cakes that uniquely made and spectacles for enjoyment.

SIEGEL’S BAGELS

Siegels Bagels

1689 Johnston Street, Vancouver

Tel: 604-685-5670

Web: http://www.siegelsbagels.com

Advice: spend over $5 to use debit, otherwise it is cash only. Get the Sesame or Poppy bagels within minutes after coming out of the firewood oven.

Siegels

At this local outpost for Siegel’s located inside Granville Island Market, the line-up forms with people asking for their favorite bagels or baked goods. My favourites here are the warm Cream Cheese filled Bagels ($3.50) made with sweetened ricotta cheese, personally my favourite from the line-up of Montreal style bagels ($ .95) are the wholewheat sesame and the rosemary rock salt. You can also get the bagels with a variety of cream cheese shmears and you can get packages of Lox from the fish vendor who is less than 15 feet away.

LEE’S DONUTS

Lees

1689 Johnston Street, Vancouver
Tel: 604-685-4021

Advice: Make sure to get the Glazed donuts fresh out of the oven and you are pretty much guaranteed to do that at 9:05 am daily.

Lee’s has been in the Granville Island Market for 30 years, many of Vancouver’s top chefs visit Lee’s often when they are in the market such as notables Dale Mackay (Chef at Lumierre) frequents Lee’s for a glazed donut which he says is the best in the world. For a donut shop to be in business after 30 years it is obvious that the recipe is stellar. It is all about donuts it this tiny kiosk in the market, the Glazed donuts ($1.33) reign supreme, they also have frosted donut rings, maple rings and bars, powered donuts, lots and lots of donut holes in all type of varieties too.
