Advice: sample the flavours, prices are at a premium here.

85% Chocolate Sorbetto

I was impressed by the quality of the ingredients in their gelato which is made fresh daily on premise, if you want to see how they make the gelato, take a look inside from the front window. I sampled my way through some of the more intriguing flavours including their range of chocolate gelato and sorbet that was made with Michel Cluizel chocolate of France. I also enjoyed tasting their refreshing Gewurztraminer sorbet from Sumac Ridge. In the end I decided on a scoop on a cone of the 85% Chocolate Sorbetto ($4.95) which was heavenly. Their 24 flavours are handcrafted daily, fresh and amazing flavours, using local when in season berries and fruits. I will be back next time for some of their classic Stracitella and also for their Thai Coconut Milk!

Advice: all their food is available for takeout.

Quattro Formaggi Pizza

Cannoli

I’ve been in a couple of times recently and have tried the Caprese salad, Bruschetta, and several of the pizzas including the Red Card, Margherita and West Coast. They have a star of a pizza oven that was brought over from Italy, the oven which has an internal carousel can bake upwards of 18 pizzas at a time in 2-4 minutes, so if you are placing a large order of pizzas you are not going to have to wait hours. The stunning quartzite bar and luxurious red leather chairs and black banquettes are inviting for enjoying one of the games showing live that day. On my last visit, I had their Quattro Formaggi Pizza ($14) with Gorgonzola, grana padano, asiago and mozzarella and for dessert the house made Cannoli ($6) filled with pistachio ricotta cream. While I love the vibe of the room and that Italian race car feeling, I’m not a fan of their pizza which I find to be quite bland for my liking.

CORNER SUITE BISTRO DELUXE

Advice: Reservations suggested during dinner hours, dropping in late night without a reservation should be ok.

Crusty Bread

Duck Rillette

Bacon and Onion Alsation Tart

From a conversation about their cool blue chairs, my friend and I happened upon for some late night bites on a recent Saturday night to share a few of the items. Aside from the cool turquoise blue chairs and the black leather banquette booths, the interior is fairly dark. The menu was intriguing and looked promising, a basket of home made bread arrived to the table shortly after we ordered, we then shared the Duck Rillette, crostini ($6). Followed by the flavourful Bacon and Onion Alsation Tart ($16) sweetbreads, apple & fennel salad.

Flourless Chocolate Torte

We had originally stopped by to have dessert, after looking at the dinner menu we both were so tempted that we decided to have some bites first, but dessert was a must and we shared the delicious Flourless Chocolate Torte ($8) with vanilla ice cream. The menu is well thought out and features a good selection of appetizers, small plates, soups, salads, and larger plates. One of the highlights is their extensive Cheese menu, featuring well over 50 cheeses; The other highlight is “The Genuine Article” a very extensive 30 page cocktail list which again is very well thought out, perhaps a bit too extensive, though you are bound to find your favourite cocktail on the list or be adventurous and try something new!

GIOVANE CAFÉ

Advice: Wifi is available, ask for the code.

Sugar Bun

I found my new favourite café last week and have already visited a couple of times and expect that I will be moving in soon. Giovane is a stylish café, large and spacious with an ever so tempting pastry case where you can order cakes by the slice or by the cake. You’ll find a good selection of Breakfast items along with baked goods, the signature Sugar Bun ($4) sugared sweet bun filled with vanilla pastry cream is absolutely delicious and already popular amongst the café patrons.

Lucchese Panini

You will also find a range of home made pizza, Panini, soups, salads and their own selection of house baked breads. On my most recent visit I had the Lucchese Panini ($9) Grilled chicken, gruyere, sun-dried tomato pesto, garlic aioli served with a house salad; and a Double Espresso ($2.50). There is also a coffee bar on the other side of the café for you to order your 49th Parallel Coffees, tea and baked goods if you didn’t have the need to visit the tempting pastry case/sandwich bar on the other side. The interior of the café is stylish and I like the 50 foot long emporium wall that features an eclectic assortment of local crafts, including origami and culinary items and there is lots of seating at tables as well as at the window.

ORU

1038 Canada Place, Vancouver

Located inside the Fairmont Pacific Rim, 2nd floor

Tel: 604-695-5500

Web: http://www.orucuisine.com/

Twitter: @OruRestaurant

Advice: Organize a group of up to 12 friends and request the Chefs Table – this is a foodies dream (advance reservations are a good idea).  Skip the bottled water and have a glass of their filtered tap water.

Bradsell Bramble Cocktail

In this stunning room which is ever so sleek and stylish, my dining experience began as I my dining companion and I reviewed the Pan-Asian inspired menu. All the dishes looked so interesting yet so different, our server provided some helpful guidance with the appetizers and the flavour profiles, we ordered some drinks and appetizers to begin. My friend had a glass of wine while I had the Bradsell Bramble Cocktail ($10) Plymouth gin, fresh lemon juice, sugar syrup, crème du mere.

Grilled Korean Beef Short Rib

Mou Shu Duck Leg

Iceburg Lettuce and Persimmons Salad

We both wanted to taste all the dishes we ordered so we decided sharing was the best way to taste the way thru the menu. We began with the Grilled Korean Beef Short Rib ($14) with bibb lettuce, samjang sauce; this followed by the Mou Shu Duck Leg ($12) steamed buns with hoisin-plum sauce. Then the fun began, we couldn’t decide which entrees to have as they all looked so good, our server suggested we order a salad and upon her advice we enjoyed the refreshing Iceburg Lettuce and Persimmons Salad ($9) with pea tendrils, apple-miso vinaigrette.

Executive Chef David Wong

Vegetarian Chow Fun

Murgh Makhani

Grilled 16oz “Crying Tiger” Rib eye Steak

I was then introduced to Executive Chef David Wong who came by to visit and to offer his suggestions as to which entrees we should have to complement our already delicious meal. The Chef has a wonderful talented team of multi-ethnic chefs in the kitchen who are from all over the Asia-Pacific and each inspired the various menu creations. Our next dish was the Vegetarian Chow Fun ($15) broad noodles, shitake mushrooms, gai lan, bean sprouts, sweet soy which was a huge bowl of comforting noodles and vegetables. We paused to savour the flavours of all the dishes we have already enjoyed. With Chef Wong’s guidance we did choose a couple of entrees to share, both were completely different. Since the restaurant has their own Tandoor oven we had to have the Murgh Makhani ($18) tandoor roasted chicken, naan bread, mint chutney which I loved, this followed by the Grilled 16oz “Crying Tiger” Rib eye Steak ($38) with maitake and shimji mushrooms, chili-lime sauce. If you love steak this “Crying Tiger” is a must, it is served sliced over a bed of greens and topped with the mushrooms and the sauce on the side for dipping.

The restaurant is large and spacious, with large windows on the north and east with views overlooking the Vancouver Convention Centre. I loved the communal table in the centre for those who are dining solo or those who want to meet others while dining. For foodies who love to entertain, instead of eating in, have your friends join you at ORU at the Chef’s Table and the Chef and his team will take care of you with special dishes from the kitchen. ORU which is named for the Japanese word meaning “to fold” has added a design element to the restaurant features with an amazing 54 metre long origami light sculpture on the ceiling that was designed by Joseph Wu.

Dessert Taster Plate

To end our meal, dessert was a must, however I couldn’t decide as all the desserts sounded so intriguing. So what do I do when I can’t decide, I had the server put together a Taster plate for us and ordered all the desserts. Of the seven desserts on the platter my favourites were the Silken Ganache Chocolate Tart with toasted coconut, fruit medley and the most delicious Cardamom Ice Cream; Lassi Parfait with mango gelee, vanilla ice cream and chocolate ginger cookies; Caramel-Pineapple Bread Pudding with lime sugar and jackfruit ice cream.

The restaurant has an impressive cocktail list, wines by the glass or by the bottle and other beverages. I will be back soon for lunch as I want to try one of their Vietnamese subs that I have already heard about.

BONCHAZ

426 West Hastings Street, Vancouver

Tel: 604-626-7215

Web: www.bonchaz.ca

Advice: Ask for a sample to decide which flavour you like best.

French Truffle Bun

It is all about the buns at Bonchaz, I was curious what a baked milk bun was all about and had to try it. With 3 flavours that include the Original ($1.25) with sea salt, Banana Walnut ($1.50) filled with bananas and walnuts; and the French Truffle ($1.75) filled with chocolate which was my favourite. These are described as coffee buns which are oven baked topped with a crisp golden crust and a hint of fresh ground coffee and these buns originate in Mexico. In addition to the buns they have Ethical Bean Coffee, sandwiches and soups. This café is spacious with some tables and chairs for eating and lounging.

PACIFICO PIZZERIA

970 Smithe Street, Vancouver

Tel: 604-408-0808

Web: http://www.pacificopizza.com

Advice: You can call in your order from the movie theatre and stay to watch the movie credits before picking up your pizza.

Pollo Rustica Pizza

On my way out of a movie at the Scotiabank Theater, I had my eye set on pizza and that’s what I had at Pacifico, the restaurant is located in the same complex. With the brick oven as the showcase uniquely topped pizzas are going in and out of the oven, it all looked so good and how could I make a decision. I had the delicious Pollo Rustica Pizza ($17) for a medium — grilled seasoned chicken, artichoke hearts and red onion, topped with smoked Gouda and mozzarella cheese and garnished with fresh cilantro; I took my pizza to go as I was solo and knew that I wouldn’t be able to eat the whole pizza on my own. There are many different pizzas on the menu, next time I want to try the Pacifico – Scallops, prawns, grape tomatoes, feta cheese and a touch of mozzarella on a garlic-brushed crust garnished with fresh basil. In addition to the pizzas, there is a large selection of pasta dishes, choose which pasta you would like along with one of the many vegetarian or meat sauces. This authentic Italian restaurant offers up much more, from their 8 inch whole focaccia with 3 variations of toppings, salads, soup, panino, baked pasta dishes, and chicken dishes. If you are still hungry there are a few desserts including their house specialty Bananas Doria – Bananas sautéed over a slow flame in a light crème caramel sauce. Served a la mode ($7).

MIKU RESTAURANT

2-1055 West Hastings Street, Vancouver

Tel: 604-568-3900

Web: www.mikurestaurant.com

Twitter: @MikuRestaurant

Advice: Go with a friend or two and be adventurous and share some dishes.

I finally visited Miku and I went for lunch with my friend Avelino who works as a Matr’d at one of the other top restaurants in the city. From the moment we sat down the server welcomed us and took us on a journey, the Miku experience takes sushi to a whole new level, one that I haven’t seen until now. This is their first restaurant outside of Japan, Vancouver was chosen as the city to begin their international expansion and they have succeeded. It has taken me awhile to visit and I am so happy that I had the pleasure of tasting the wonderous dishes that the sushi chef created.

Aburi Tuna

Aburi Salmon Oshi Sushi

King Roll

Avelino and I shared 3 dishes and each was spectacular in presentation and taste. To start we had the Aburi Tuna ($12) – albacore tuna on a bed of crisp vegetables and dressed with masatake sauce. Next up was their house specialty flame seared Aburi Salmon Oshi Sushi ($14) – local salmon pressed and dressed with the chefs wn soy & Miku sauce, topped with Jalepeno. The last dish was the King Roll ($10) – ebi tempura, snow crab & avocado topped with tobiko, with a chili cream sauce. The restaurant is large and impressive with high ceilings, and lots of light from the large surrounding windows, to the comfortable and colourful chairs to the communal table that seats 12 at the front to the many tables that fill the rest of the restaurant. The sushi bar is well positioned next to the open kitchen, here you can watch the chefs create.

I was also happy to see the Ocean Wise symbols throughout the menu, many sushi restaurants can take Miku’s lead as this is wonderful. The menu offers a wide variety to choose from sushi, sashimi and cooked specialties such as the “Shushai” creations. We both had a look at their creative dessert menu all was tempting though we weren’t hungry, next time it will be a must to try some of their homemade Green Tea ice cream along with one of the other desserts. Already looking forward to my next visit!
