Advice: Advance reservations a must.

With a change to modern French cooking this long standing restaurant is now owned by Chef Robert Guest and David Auer who have both completely transformed the dining room and dining experience. The dining room now features Canadian artist Vince Dumoulin paintings on the white walls which provide a stunning artistic presence which equally match the beauty created on the plates.

North Arm Farms Carrot Juice

Bacon & Eggs

My friend Joe Tong joined me for dinner and both had the Degustation Menu a 7 course tasting menu with French wine pairings.  To Start we were served a beautifully presented North Arm Farms Carrot Juice followed by their version of Bacon & Eggs.

Ocean in the Pot

Ocean in the Pot

Sturgeon

The next course was very cool, Ocean in the Pot cooked in the ocean at the table. The Sturgeon was cooked in the glass jar, from the ocean to the table.

Thiesen Farms Pheasant

Rhubarb sorbet w/ herbs

Venison Tenderloin in a chocolate sauce

The next course featured Thiesen Farms Pheasant with carrot purée and edible flowers another beautiful dish which was followed an interactive palate cleanser where they poured Liquid Nitrogen on herbs table-side before adding Rhubarb Sorbet. Interactive and very refreshing taking local to another level – Nitrogen prepared Rhubarb sorbet w/ herbs!  The next course was the perfectly cooked and outstanding Venison Tenderloin in a chocolate sauce with local vegetables.

Garden Creme Brûlées

Our last course was the beautiful Garden Creme Brûlées – Lavender rhubarb and carrot to finish off the meal.

The chef has his own fruits, herbs and vegetable garden on the roof where he is growing as much as he can seasonally, these creative folk are taking French cooking and mixing with molecular gastronomy creating one of a kind dining experiences. I am looking forward to a return visit to try more dishes as the seasons change.

Chorizo & Patatas

Grilled Octopus & Basque sauce

Finding a culinary paradise in Coal Harbour, Lift recently got a lift when Chef Jefferson Alvarez took over the kitchen giving this restaurant a lift in Latin American and Spanish flavours. With its spectacular view of the harbour and mountains, the restaurant is featuring unique dishes that are full of flavour. Once seated I had the pleasure to peruse the offerings on their individual ipad menus which offered wine pairings with each of the courses, this is a clever idea for many that may not be versed in wine expertise. I began the meal with a couple of their bar snacks, the outstanding Chorizo & Patatas ($8) along with the Grilled Octopus & Basque sauce ($8).

Rice Crusted Scallops

Wild Mushroom Risotto

Bison Short Ribs

My dining partner and I then shared the Rice Crusted Scallops ($16) with a Uni Coconut Foam and Forbidden Rice, loved the crispness of outer scallops. This was followed by a couple of mains, the Wild Mushroom Risotto ($30) with Wild mushrooms, arborio rice, parmesan, and truffle oil was outstanding and perfectly done! The last dish was the Bison Short Ribs ($35) with seasonal vegetables. We added one side which was the outstanding Crispy Truffle Fries ($6) with truffle mayo in a cute basket.

Black Forest Liquid Dessert

Almond Chocolate Bar

Their dessert offerings are best when in the liquid form, we both loved the Black Forest Liquid Dessert ($11) with vanilla gelato, chambourd, Kahlua, Aztec Chocolate Bitters, Creme de Cacao followed by the Almond Chocolate Bar ($8) in a Delish Cardamon infused dark chocolate mousse and white chocolate parfait.

Visit soon and let Chef Jefferson Alvarez take you on a culinary journey through Latin America and Spain! I am looking forward to visiting again next time for brunch!

Advice: The patio is the place to be on a sunny day.

Moroccan Chickpeas

Picture yourself on the beach on the Mediterranean sipping some drinks and eating delicious food, now wake up from your dream and head on down to the foot of Denman and watch the boats sail by, sip on those drinks and indulge in flavours from Morocco, Spain and the Mediterranean region by known restaurateurs Gord Martin and Abdel Elatouabi.  Last week I had dinner with my friend and fellow food writer Cassandra Anderton in this nice room overlooking the marina, to warm our palate we were served a complimentary bowl of delish Moroccan Chickpeas.

Kalamata Olive Homous

Turkish Flatbread

Greek Salad a la sol

Prawn Kebab

To begin our meal we had the Kalamata Olive Homous which came with the delicious Turkish Flatbread for dipping. Next was the Greek Salad a la sol, a very different take on a Greek salad made with grilled Octopus; though I enjoyed the Prawn Kebab over the latter which was full of flavour.

Duck Confit

Black Truffle Chicken

Red Snapper

For our mains, the great flavours continued, my absolute favourite dish was the Duck Confit served with a rice cake and greens, followed by the the Black Truffle Chicken and then the Red Snapper.

Lavender, Pistachio, Marsala Ice Cream

Cinnamon Nutmeg Creme Brûlée

Lemon Meringue Pie in a glass

For dessert, I loved the Lavender, Pistachio, Marsala Ice Cream as well as the rich Cinnamon Nutmeg Creme Brûlée, the last dessert that I tried was the Lemon Meringue Pie in a glass which didn’t wow me.

SOIRETTE MACARONS & TEA

Advice: Ask for help to pair the macarons to the tea. Macarons can be purchased individually or in a box of 6 or 12.

You will find a showcase of macarons in this Coal Harbour locale and there are rows and rows of them all lined up by colour and flavour with all sorts of different fillings. You’ll also find quite an extensive selection of teas which have been custom selected and blended.

Creamy Earl Grey Tea & Macaron

I had a Creamy Earl Grey Tea along with Caramel Fleur de Sel Macaron for an afternoon snack as I sat back looking at the colorful macarons in the showcase. They also offer mousse cakes and cheesecakes that come in 7″ and 9″ sizes (you just need to order them in advance). Watch for exciting new macaron flavours!

Irish Beer Sampler

Cheddar Jack Nachos

I have dined here on a few occasions, most recently I had their Irish Beer Sampler ($8.75) featuring 4 6oz glasses of each of the Guinness, Kilkenny, Smithwicks and Harp to have with their huge platter of Cheddar Jack Nachos ($21.90) tomatoes, jalapenos, pico de gallo salsa, sour cream and guacamole.

Irish Stew

Braised Short Rib Sliders

Gnocchi

I love the outstanding Irish Stew ($19.95) slow simmered lamb shank and vegetables in a Guinness demi-glaze with mashed potatoes. I also have enjoyed the tender Braised Short Rib Sliders ($13.95) with garlic aioli and crispy onions; as well as the delicious Gnocchi ($14.95) handmade gnocchi, basil mushroom cream sauce, truffle oil and parmesan cheese.

Butterscotch Sticky Date Pudding

I have only had one dessert as I am often quite full after dining here, I loved the hearty Butterscotch Sticky Date Pudding($7.95) with vanilla bean ice cream. You’ll find an authentic Irish experience along with Irish food, drink and music!
