NU GREEK STREET

Granville & Georgia Streets

Tel: n/a

Web: http://www.nurestaurant.com

Twitter: @NuGreekStreet

Advice: Follow them on twitter for daily open hours and location. At this time there are 2 locations located in the same proximity, the 2nd location is at Dunsmiur & Howe.

Chicken Souvlaki

I love Georgia Kambolis’s fresh baked pita that was once only available in the restaurant on the waterfront, now you can get this delicious pita on the street. I was by for lunch the other day and had the delicious meal in itself Chicken Souvlaki ($6.50) with housemade pita, local onions and tomatoes. In addition to the souvlaki and greek salad you can also get the same pita on its own naked, or with dips or just plain ‘ol grilled!

I was curious as to why successful restaurateur Harry Kambolis would open carts on the street, so I asked him, Harry said because it takes him back to where it all began, by English Bay, at a Souvlaki Place, a take-out stand where he worked when he was a teenager.

Advice: Follow them on twitter for daily open hours and location. Squeeze the lime on the beef and the orange on the pork.

Tacos

I have always loved tacos, although it took me awhile, I finally scouted out Cartel Taco to have their Korean fusion style tacos. Most of the time you will find this street cart parked on the street in their downtown location, on the day that I chose to visit they were mobile outside of the downtown core in Railtown. These aren’t any ordinary tacos by any means they are soft corn tacos in a Bulgogi style using high quality free range meats that are marinated and braised before being barbecued. I had the Tacos ($10 for 4) on a plate that included 2 beef rib-eye & 2 pork topped with their delicious salsas. All the ingredients are sourced locally, made fresh, you can get 1 taco or more, I’d say go for more!

West Georgia St. and Granville St.

Tel: 778-989-4883

Advice: You couldn’t get too much closer to the entrance/exit of the Canada Line Station at Vancouver Centre.  Follow them on twitter for daily open hours.

Chicken Sandwich

You can’t miss this bright red street cart on the corner of Georgia and Granville, I stopped by recently for one of their tasty  Chicken Sandwiches ($6.25) rotisserie chicken in gravy topped with crispy deep fried onion strings in a soft buttermilk bun. The menu is limited which saves on having to choose when you don’t know what to have, you will want to order the Chicken Sandwich that is why you are here; you will also find butter tarts and beverages.

ARTURO’S MEXICO TO GO TRUCK

Tel: n/a

Advice: Monday to Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Located between Waterfront Station and Canada Place, this large silver mobile truck which you certainly can’t miss is serving up a simple menu of some Mexican specialties.

Burrito Salad Bowl

I had the Burrito Salad Bowl ($7) a burrito without the tortilla, with shredded lettuce, black beans, spanish rice, vegetables, salsa and a tasty tinga chicken marinated in smoked Jalepeno, fresh stewed tomatoes and spices. All the ingredients are of the highest quality, and everything is made fresh daily including their 3 different salsas. Next time it is a must that I try the Tortilla Soup at $3, the word on the street is that is the best tortilla soup in the city!

Corner of Granville & Broadway

Tel: n/a

Web: http://reupbbq.com/ReUp/Re-Up_BBQ.html

Twitter: @reupbbq

Advice: Open daily 11:30am – 6pm

It is the size of a hot dog cart that does not serve hot dogs, serving up a very simple menu that is tasty, filling and inexpensive.

BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich

The highlight here is the BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich ($6.75) that has been slow cooked in a very tasty sauce served with extra sauce on top of the slaw, meat inside a big good textured bun. This sandwich is the only one on the menu along with some drinks, keeping it simple is what works here.

Chanterelle Mushroom Poutine

I have been to Fresh Local Wild a couple occasions already and have eaten everything on the menu, most recently I had the Hot Smoked Salmon Sandwich ($8) awesome bun with crunchy coleslaw and a very tasty slightly spiced sauce with Fries ($2) slightly salted and perfectly fried (add-on combo). I have also had the Chanterelle Mushroom Poutine ($5) slightly salted fries, topped with cheese curds and mushrooms which was superb. They have put together a simple menu that features delicious, local and sustainable food to the people on the street at great prices!

Duck Confit Salad

Deep Fried Rice Balls

Basil-Lychee Lemonade

I had heard about this mobile truck/street cart for quite some time and visited last week for some flavourful food. The menu is fairly limited to about 6 items and most are $6 or less, this is Pan-Asian street food at its best. One of the owners Don Letendre, is the former Executive Chef at Elixer at the Opus Hotel and I see they have been busy catering film gigs when not parked during the lunch hour.  I had the delish Duck Confit Salad ($6) along with the Deep Fried Rice Balls ($6) along with their Basil-Lychee Lemonade ($4). This is one truck you are going to want to follow.
