Advice: No reservations, located on the roof, seasonal.

After eating at Vij’s over the years starting out at their original restaurant on Broadway I have always been enchanted by the wonderful dishes they make. The patio opened earlier in the summer on the roof of their new restaurant which they relocated to in Cambie Village late last year. As many are daunted by the lineups to dine here, I learned that the trick to getting a seat on the patio is to go early in the week  which is exactly what I did on a late summer night.

First of all having a cocktail here made by bartender Jay Jones is the start of the flavour journey. I enjoyed the Cocktails & Dreams tiki style with Lemon hart spiced rum, Buffalo trace bourbon, passion fruit, dry Curaçao, lemon creole bitters, Pernod served in a stylish Tiki mug. This followed with a taste of some of their appetizers, not a normal size portion, just a taste for me to try.

The dishes on the patio are quite different than those presented in the restaurant, of course the Indian flavours are front and centre, but the plating differs from the latter. I had the delicious Lamb in a creamy fennel seed curry which is served in a large bowl meant to be the meal. The Vij’s story evolves as do the lives of it’s creators, Vikram Vij and Meeru Dhalwala, the patio was a vibrant addition to this great restaurant this past summer, make sure you visit once the warm weather returns as the seasons turn.
