I had lunch the other day with Richard Chewie, the restaurant owner of the successful Chewies in Kitsilano who has just opened a new stylish New Orleans styled joint in Coal Harbour.
The large room features 115 seats inside and 90 seats outside patio which will be enclosed and heated and open by spring. Inside the grey toned room, you will find high ceilings, large windows, odd wood walls and a very cool glowing floor. This restaurant is a grown up version of his 1st in Kitsilano and it’s a shining star of the Coal Harbour neighborhood. The Executive Chef is Greg Edwards (formerly ran large restaurant kitchens in Toronto) and the Pastry Chef is Maria Telma Guvara.
I shared the Fried Gator & huSh PuPPieS ($13) with Richard Chewie, it was Chicken fried gator soaked in buttermilk, corn hush puppies, house made jalapeño jam. This was a first for me, the Farmed gator is hormone free and comes from the south, it was lean and delicious.
Some of the other dishes that I tried were the:
Kale Salad ($10)
Green kale, chickpeas, crispy capers, garlic croutons, lemon-garlic dressing
Fried Green tomato & PrawnS ($14)
Grilled black tiger prawns, parmesan-panko crusted tomatoes, bacon, shrimp remoulade
Beef Brisket ($18)
House smoked brisket, mashed potatoes, homemade cornbread, Southern slaw
BourBon BaCon BannoFee ($8)
Banana flambé, mascarpone cheese
