Prepare to experience some of the city’s newest and tastiest offerings on Wednesday, July 28, 2010 from 6 to 9 p.m. as Vancouver Foodster, Vancouver’s essential online food and drink guide, celebrates its one-year anniversary with a summer party at Canvas in Gastown. The event will feature bites from buzzing and renowned restaurants and vendors from Vancouver, as well as wine from the BC region. Proceeds raised will benefit the Greater Vancouver Food Bank’s Community Angel Food Runners Program.

Tell us of the hidden gems in the city, we want to know the next restaurant (s) that Richard Wolak should visit in and around Vancouver. Do your research and tell us why Richard Wolak should try the places you are suggesting. Don’t suggest places that he has already been too.  If we select it you will get to experience the VIP foodie experience by being able to come to the event just a tad earlier when it’s not so busy.  You can chat it up with the chefs, ask them questions and take pictures with them – just like Vancouver Foodster.

If you are up for a little drive, I would highly recommend checking out Restaurant 62 in Abbotsford. I was there recently, and once I got over the extensive wine list, I fully drooling over the menu. Once my food was served, I was not disappointed!

An excellent Indian restaurant on oak and broadway, pretty cheap and great food, not too spicy.

This neighbourhood gem is on the eastside (Victoria and 41st) called Shima-Ya Sushi. It's an authentic Japanese sushi restaurant run by a sushi chef from Chiyoda (who also worked at Yoshi) and his wife. The fish is fresh and the place is always busy with mainly Japanese customers. Reservations highly recommended for this tiny little restaurant. 5589 Victoria Drive. 604-322-4649.

Make a trip to Victoria – it's well worth it and when you do, hit up Brasserie L'ecole, Zambri's and Veneto

    WAIT A MINUTE – YOU HAVEN'T REVIEWED TOJO'S?

    done. MUST.

  8. raincoaster says:

You should review The Keefer, because I live two blocks from there and am not willing to go home, get dressed up, and go to a place that's only a half block from my office unless somebody I trust has gotten out there and told me it's really worth it.

Also: it looks just entirely too cool for school and I'm not sure if I like that or I hate it.

All of the following is their blurbage from the website:

The Keefer Bar is a place where you can come to escape the rush and unwind in a unique atmosphere where cocktails, food and music are in harmony. The intricately designed cocktail program focuses on Apothecary style drinks created to soothe ailments and balance one’s mood. Ingredients for the Asian influenced small plated food and specially crafted drinks are sourced from local Chinatown markets and herbalists. Bar Manager, Danielle Tatarin and Creative Director, Free Lee work with their team to develop the exceptional atmosphere and unique house made tinctures, bitters, syrups and teas to incorporate into the pre-prohibition influenced drinks.

this is a cute little diner spot on hastings off of nanaimo. they serve really good size portioned breakfast with a whole lot of variety from veggie burgers to salmon egg bennys! the place is a little old fashion but definitely has that homey feeling with their light blue booth seatings.

You should definitely check out the much-loved but still relatively unknown Bo Laksa King. Run by Bo, who hails from Burma, and his wife, this tiny restaurant is little more than a counter tucked inside of a grocery store near Joyce Station. But don't let the humble kitchen fool you – the menu offers delicious, authentic dishes from Burma & from across South East Asia (Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand & Indonesia.)

Favourites include their laksa noodles, roti canai (savoury or sweet) & beef rendong. This place won't be a “secret” much longer as they're set to open a second location this coming Monday!

The best Tom Kah Gai soup I have been able to find in Vancouver (ie not in Bangkok). Their menu is fairly basic but you can customize and change things to suit whatever you are craving. It is a tiny hole in the wall, best for takeout.

Mmmmm poutine. I can't believe you haven't been here yet! (At least I wasn't able to find a review of it on the site). I have brought several die-hard, poutine snobs from Montreal here, and they LOVED it. The smooties are very good as well.

    Paradiso Di Stelle

Light, fresh, rustic pasta and panninis, with quality ingredients. Gelato, espresso and a full bar. A fantastic view. The perfect lunch spot for downtown Victoria.

Elegant, creative fine dining. The menu is very seasonal, mostly local and a good portion comes from the garden patio (figs, tomatillos, white icicle radishes, etc). A small but well rounded wine list and a beautiful view of Sooke Harbour.

It's hard to find good ramen outside Japan, but Motomachi Shokudo comes close. It's the healthier sister of Kintaro but without the lineups. They use fresh organic ingredients, and the broth is packed with a deep intense flavour. Try the charcoal miso bamboo ramen or BBQ pork ramen with a soft boiled egg– and don't forget to slurp!

La Bodega it is on 1277 Howe st. It is a little corner of Spain in downtown vancouver. Delicious, reasonably priced tapas and the sangria is to die for!

Prata Man on Capstan Way @ Garden City in Richmond. Style: Singaporean-Malay Cuisine

This hole in the wall not only never ceases to satisfy my ever-so-critical tastebuds, but is one of the remaining cheaper joints in town. With just a $20 bill, two people can easily dine like royalty over perfectly steamed rice flavoured with hainanese chicken broth (the power of a good cup of rice is never-to-be-underestimated), chicken satay skewers both marinated and roasted to perfection, accompanied by a chunky (aka real) peanut sauce, and the most delightful cup of chicken, ginger soup to tingle your senses!

I am a self-proclaimed foodie. I just came back from Alaska, the land of deep frying. Let me tell you that as soon as my plane landed in Richmond, I b-lined for this restaurant! Enjoy!

  16. Ssommerville says:

You have to try http://www.simbasgrill.com/ (if you haven't already. First tried it in Burnaby Food was FANTASTIC. Burnaby location was very small so you need reservations. Then we tried the Vancouver location. Just as great! The owner splits his time between both locations and is great! Food can be quite spicy hot, (which doesn't always agree with me) so we asked for milder and also asked the owner to order for us. We weren't dissapointed! In fact I think I would go this route every time. Vancouver location is a little larger than Burnaby, but not much. The African Beer is fabulous! The food is to die for, (at least I thought so, and so did our friends when we took them). Just go..and enjoy! (I hope I win) lol.

If you're looking for some authentic full-fat, amazingly flavorful noodles then Kintaro Ramen at 788 Denman is your best bet. The place is tiny and packed all the time. The line up is out the door and to the street corner during most lunch hours but it's totally worth the wait. You can order different types of broth and how much fat you want in it – they literally shake more or less fat into your soup. Obviously fat = oh-so-delicious.

Then there's always the food mecca of Richmond. You can get some of the best steamed pork dumplings (the kind with the soup inside) in town at Shanghai River at 7831 Westminster Highway. It's typically packed on weekends – always a good sign.

If you seriously want to go off the beaten path there's a tiny hole-in-the-wall Taiwanese restaurant in Richmond that has fantastic home cooking style food. When I say hole-in-the-wall I mean it. The whole place has maybe 20 seats. I can't even tell you the name of the place because I don't know it in English but the deep fried tofu is amazing and so is the pork chop noodle or rice. I'm a huge garlic fan so the garlic condiment they serve with the tofu is enough to make me go back weekly. The owner is a lovely Chinese woman who doesn't speak much English but don't worry there's an English version of the menu. Sorry I don't have the address or name but it's directly next door to Dairy Queen at Buswell and Andersen Road in Richmond.
